Thule Sapling Elite Back Carrier

With a fully adjustable back panel and hip-belt, this is versatile – you can load your child from the front or side.

There is a nifty reservoir you can fill with water, and a small removable backpack. We like the child-viewing mirror and the easily-accessible storage pockets. Suitable from seven months to 22kg.

Tested by Kate Bishop, mum to Holly, six months, and Poppy, two and a half years. She says:

Bulky but very comfortable, with useful extras included. There’s lots of storage space, with room for my phone and keys.

I like the extra backpack – handy for café stops or sharing the load between walkers.

The child harness seems very secure and easy to use: the design means you don’t have to fiddle to get little arms through it.

Tested by Kate Gillies, mum to Rafe, 13 months. She says:

The seat angle on this seemed uncomfortable, and the gap to pop Rafe in seemed too narrow.

I needed to use considerable force to extend the stand, and also to get the sunshade out – the whole thing came out, which didn’t seem right, and it wasn't clear how to secure it properly.

I found this option overly bulky, and it didn’t really appeal to me.

Tested by Nikki Hunt, mum to Emmy, two years. She says:

This was very heavy, but it’s easy to adjust and comfy to wear. I could collapse the legs by myself while wearing it.

I like the additional backpack but fixing it to the carrier was fiddly and frustrating. The sunshade is a great idea, but returning it to its pocket took two of us 10 minutes of contortion, and even then we admitted defeat!

Tested by dad Tom Hillier for the M&B Awards 2016:

Why would you recommend this product to a friend/fellow dad?

I would definitely recommend this to friends etc. I felt that the design was really robust and when you're out and about on long walks with this you need something that is reliable. Its packed full of features, all well designed so that it didn't end up being bulky to carry. The kids loved going in it, and the easily adjustable straps made it simple to adjust from small kids to larger kids. Wearing it, the children sit nice and high, so the carrier rests easily on your hips and doesn't feel like a burden.

How does this product make your life easier as a dad?

It folded down into the car very easily and didn't take up too much room so it was easy to sling in the car along with the prams.

If you could change one thing about this product what would it be?

The sunshade was very easy to get out, but the velcro fixings made it slightly harder to put away, and I had to fight with it a little as the velcro kept sticking whilst putting it back in. This is a very minor thing and there is little to fault it.

Why would you recommend this product to a friend/fellow dad?

This baby carrier is really easy to use. It is very reliable on long walks. It is both comfortable for me when carrying a child but also the child was really comfortable and enjoyed being in it. It had loads of storage space and places to keep things which was really handy.

How does this product make your life easier as a dad?

It makes carrying a child a complete joy and the straps were really well thought out so it was easy to make any adjustments if necessary. It made life easy as the child actually wanted to be in it rather than having to make the, go in it.

If you could change one thing about this product what would it be?

If I could change one thing it would be the colour. I'm not a big fan of grey.

Tested by mum Laura Bennett for the M&B Awards 2016:

Why would you recommend this product to a friend/fellow mum?

It is lightweight and our 2 year old toddler was comfortable in the baby carrier. The bags which could be removed were very useful.

How does this product make your life easier as a mum?

A good back pack for strolls in the countryside or hiking.

If you could change one thing about this product what would it be?

The padding on the waist made me very warm. Less padding would be ideal.
