The best baby face creams and moisturisers: Mum-tested and baby-approved

Baby Best Face Cream and Moisturisers 2025 Collage

by Anne Lora Scagliusi |

When it comes to your baby’s delicate skin, especially on their face, finding the right moisturiser isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s a must. Baby skin is thinner and more sensitive than adult skin, making it more prone to dryness, irritation, and flare-ups like eczema.

But with shelves full of options, it’s hard to know where to start. Barrier creams? Lightweight daily moisturisers? Fragrance-free or naturally scented? There’s a lot to think about — including skin type, sensitivities, ingredient safety, and how it actually feels and works day-to-day.

That’s why we’ve consulted with baby skin experts Dr Paris Acharya, Lesley Gilchrist and  Kit & Kin co-founder Chris Money to guide you through what really matters when it comes to baby skincare. Whether you're after something soothing for eczema-prone skin, deeply hydrating for colder months, or gentle enough for everyday use, we've rounded up our top parent-tested, baby-approved face creams and moisturisers, plus a few vegan and eco-friendly picks too.

The best baby face creams and moisturisers 2025 at a glance

How we chose and tested the best baby face creams and moisturisers?

When it comes to your baby’s delicate skin, only the gentlest and most effective products will do. That’s why we took testing seriously, calling on real parents to try these baby face creams and moisturisers on their little ones, from newborns to toddlers. I also tested many of them myself, these are the products I’ve trusted since my son was a newborn, and still use now that he’s a busy two-year-old toddler.

We’ve only included the products that truly work. If it didn’t make the cut, you won’t find it here. This list was carefully put together by me, a mum who’s tested over 30 baby skincare products just trying to find what actually works on sensitive baby skin. Plus, I’ve had expert advice from skincare doctor Dr Paris Acharya, midwife Lesley Gilchrist, and Kit & Kin co-founder Chris Money, so you can trust these picks are really worth trying.

This is your go-to guide for all things baby skincare: from face creams and nappy creams to oils, SPF and soothing balms. We looked at every detail, each product had to be dermatologically tested, hypoallergenic, and free from harsh chemicals, parabens, and artificial fragrances. We focused on skin-loving ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, and natural oils to help protect and repair baby’s delicate skin barrier, especially for dry, sensitive, or eczema-prone skin.

But we didn’t just stop at the label. Our parent testers shared real-life feedback: did these creams soothe irritated cheeks? Calm flare-ups? Keep their baby’s skin soft, smooth, and comfy all day? We also looked at texture, how easy they were to apply, how quickly they absorbed, and how they felt on tiny faces (because no one wants a sticky baby!).

Lastly, we included a few tried-and-true favourites that our team has personally used and loved because sometimes, the best recommendations come from the products parents reach for again and again. We’ve also featured standout winners from the Mother&Baby Awards. Every product on our list earned its place by being safe, effective, and parent-approved.

It’s perfect for daily use, especially in warmer months when you don’t want anything too heavy on those delicate cheeks. If you're looking for a barrier cream free from harsh chemicals and synthetic additives, Neal's Yard Remedies Baby Barrier Cream is an excellent choice. It’s specially formulated with a blend of organic, gentle ingredients designed to soothe and protect delicate newborn skin. Key ingredients like organic chamomile help calm irritation thanks to their natural anti-inflammatory properties, while nourishing beeswax and sunflower oil create a breathable barrier that protects without suffocating the skin. Glycerin, a plant-based moisturiser, locks in hydration to keep skin soft and supple, and the non-nano zinc oxide works as a safe, effective shield against moisture, the main culprit behind nappy rash.

This cream is hypoallergenic and dermatologically tested, making it suitable for newborns weighing 3 kilograms (about 6 pounds 10 ounces) and over. It’s also cruelty-free, aligning with ethical skincare values many parents appreciate. Despite its gentle nature, it’s effective enough to be used multiple times, around 100 applications from a single 50g jar, so a little really does go a long way.

Parents rave about how well it works and how soft it leaves their babies' skin. One mum said she absolutely loves the cream, noting that it cleared up nappy rash quickly and that she even uses it on her elbows, knees, and heels because of its nourishing qualities. Another parent mentioned replacing harsher creams with this one because it’s free from nasties and kinder on sensitive skin. Many agree that their babies enjoy the soothing sensation during application, which is always a bonus!

While it is a bit of a luxury compared to standard supermarket creams, most find it worth the investment for the peace of mind that comes with using organic, safe ingredients on such sensitive skin. Overall, Neal's Yard Remedies Baby Barrier Cream offers a thoughtful blend of nature and science to protect and nurture your baby’s skin, making it a trusted staple for parents seeking the best for their little ones.

Oilatum Junior Eczema and Dry Skin CreamAmazon

If your little one struggles with eczema or really dry skin, Oilatum Junior Cream could be a real lifesaver. When my son had flare-ups as a newborn, I felt totally overwhelmed until a health visitor recommended Oilatum. It’s thick and soothing without feeling greasy, and I love that it’s fragrance-free (when he was a newborn, I preferred no scent at all) so it doesn’t irritate sensitive skin further.

This cream locks in moisture for hours, which made a huge difference on colder days when his skin would get red and flaky. I always use it after their Oilatum Gentle Head to Toe Wash, and together they’ve helped keep his skin calm and comfortable. If you need something reliable that actually helps soothe eczema-prone skin, this is a top pick from a mum who’s been there.

Weleda Baby Derma White Mallow Body LotionWeleda
Price: $18.14

Shortlisted for Best Baby Skincare at the 2015 Mother & Baby Awards, this cream combines calming organic mallow and gentle pansy extracts with nourishing organic coconut and sweet almond oils. Golden beeswax creates a mild protective layer that soothes and shields itchy, dry skin naturally.

Parents praise its gentle, effective care. When my son got irritated skin during winter from daily hot baths, this cream came to my rescue. It’s unscented, which I don’t really prefer, I do wish it had a little scent. I alternate it with Nala's Baby Sleep Lotion at night because I love the calming lavender scent. I just lather it on, and it’s effective every time.

Why sun protection matters for your baby – all year round

You might think sunscreen is just for beach days and heatwaves, but the truth is, your baby’s delicate skin needs protection in every season. Whether it’s a bright summer day or a chilly winter one, UV rays don’t take a break — in fact, up to 80% of them can bounce off snow, making sunburn possible even when it’s cloudy and cold.

Babies have thinner, more sensitive skin than adults, which means they’re more prone to sun damage. That’s why it’s important to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 whenever your baby’s skin is exposed — whether you're heading to the park, running errands, or enjoying a snowy walk.

So, alongside those sun hats in summer and cosy layers in winter, a swipe of baby-safe SPF should always be part of your everyday essentials.

E45 Suncare Kids & Baby Sensitive Lotion SPF50+ provides strong sun protection with a gentle formula specially made for babies and children with sensitive or eczema-prone skin. It absorbs quickly, is water-resistant, and leaves no greasy residue, making it ideal for active little ones enjoying outdoor activities, especially swimming and water play.

Customers find the sunscreen effective, with one mentioning it works well on sensitive skin and another noting it provides good protection even in high sun levels. The product also receives positive feedback for its quality and skin-softening properties, with one customer appreciating that it doesn’t feel greasy or shiny. However, several customers have reported significant eye irritation.

One parent shared, "Used just once this morning and already love this for my 2-year-old! I’ve tried so many different types of sensitive suncream for him, but they all make his face red and his eyes red, swollen, watery, and sore instantly (I obviously don’t put it in his eyes, just around), but this hasn’t affected him at all! I’ll definitely be buying more!"

Ocean Freedom Surf Clay Blue SPF 50+ — Mineral Sunscreen for Kids

Expert rating:
3.5

If you want a fun, compact sunscreen that won’t take up much space, I think Ocean Freedom Surf Clay Blue SPF 50+ is a great choice. From my experience, this vibrant blue, clay-based mineral sunscreen feels natural and safe, with ingredients like zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, kaolin clay, and beeswax. It’s dermatologist-approved, reef-safe, and CANSA-certified, offering broad-spectrum SPF 50+ protection that really shields young skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. While the blue tint is fun for kids, some might not like it. But I see the appeal — it has that cool surf vibe and makes application more playful. That said, I found the thick texture can pull on the skin when applying it on my son and doesn’t fully blend once on.

The formula is water-resistant for up to 40 minutes and free from parabens, sulphates, and toxins, which is important now that many of us are eco-conscious. The blue color subtly fades in water (without looking like a smurf!), adding a playful touch that both kids and adults enjoy. Plus, the 50g tub is super handy for family trips. It also comes in Pink.

Overall, I think it’s a solid pick for families wanting strong sun protection, especially for active kids who love water play. That said, the thick texture does require some effort to apply smoothly.
Parent reviews have been mixed. One said, “This sunscreen is an absolute game-changer for all your beach adventures!... Suitable for sports and swimming for the whole family... Safe for children with sensitive skin.”

Another shared, “Ideal for staying protected in water or during sports… clings well and won’t wash off… but it’s thick and heavy, sometimes leaving visible streaks.”

Pros

  • Broad-spectrum SPF 50+ protection, shielding against UVA and UVB rays
  • Made with natural mineral ingredients like zinc oxide and kaolin clay
  • Compact 50g tub, easy to carry for family outings
  • Highly water-resistant for up to 40 minutes, great for swimming and active play

Cons

  • Thick, clay-heavy texture can be difficult to apply and rub in smoothly
  • Can leave visible streaks, especially if not applied carefully
  • Blue tint may not appeal to everyone
Key ingredients:Natural mineral-based formula with zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, kaolin clay, and beeswax
Eco-friendly:Reef-safe, paraben-free, sulphate-free, toxin-free, and cruelty-free
  • Thick, clay-based formula that provides strong coverage
  • Effective for up to 40 minutes during swimming and active play
  • Compact 50g tub — perfect for on-the-go families
  • Blue tint makes it fun for kids

Dermatologist-approved baby skincare tips for every season

Your baby’s delicate skin is beautiful and also super sensitive. From chilly winds and indoor heating to sunny strolls and sweaty car seats, every season brings its own set of skincare challenges. To help you care for your little one’s skin all year round, we spoke to dermatologist Dr Paris Acharya, who shared her top advice for keeping baby skin healthy, hydrated, and protected, no matter the weather.

Weather changes and baby skin

“Cold weather can significantly impact a baby or toddler’s skin, leading to dryness and irritation. A baby's skin is thin and can lose heat quickly; therefore, dry, colder temperatures can cause more skin issues than for adults. Common issues include dry patches, chapped cheeks and lips, red, irritated skin, and sometimes windburn.”

But hot weather has its own concerns too — think heat rashes, sweat irritation, and sunburn. During warmer months, lightweight, breathable clothing and keeping your baby cool and shaded are just as important as moisturising. Frequent nappy changes and cool (not cold!) baths can also help avoid overheating and irritation.

Hydration is key — in any season

“The contrast between the cold air and indoor heating can strip the moisture from their sensitive skin,” explains Dr Paris. In summer, warm weather, air conditioning, and extra sweating can have the same drying effect. That’s why keeping baby skin hydrated is always a top priority — using a gentle, nourishing moisturiser daily can make all the difference.

Ingredients to look for

“When choosing a moisturiser or cream, parents should look for ingredients like ceramides to help strengthen the skin barrier for deep hydration, and glycerin to draw moisture into the skin,” says Dr Paris. These are safe, effective choices year-round — and especially great after bathtime or outdoor play.

What if your baby has eczema?

“For babies with eczema, seasonal changes can be particularly challenging. Cold or dry conditions can make skin conditions like eczema worse,” she explains. “It’s vital to keep their skin well-moisturised by using fragrance-free, thicker creams or ointments at least twice a day.” In summer, be cautious of sweating and heat triggers — opt for cotton clothing, keep them cool, and continue with gentle, hydrating care.

Bathing basics

"Keep baths between 5–10 minutes long and avoid scrubbing the skin. Babies also don't need to be bathed every day—3–4 times a week is perfect," says Dr Paris. Whether it's winter or summer, always follow up with a moisturiser to lock in hydration and prevent flare-ups.

Outdoor protection — all year long

No matter the temperature, baby skin needs a barrier against the elements. “In colder climates, if the temperature is below freezing, keep outdoor time to 15–45 minutes to protect their skin from the harsh elements,” Dr Paris advises. And when it's hot, aim for early mornings or late afternoons, avoid peak sun, and keep them shaded and cool.

Balm + SPF = non-negotiable

“Using a protective balm on exposed areas like cheeks and lips helps prevent any chapping and discomfort,” she notes and that applies to both cold winds and warm breezes. And yes, SPF still matters:
“Although you may not think it, sunscreen is also necessary in autumn and winter, it's the most important skincare product for everyone from six months old, all year round. UV rays can still be harmful, especially with reflection off snow.” The same goes for sunny days — baby-safe sunscreen should always be in your nappy bag.

What to know about baby skincare ingredients

When choosing skincare for your baby, the ingredients matter more than fancy labels like “natural” or “eco-friendly.” As Chris Money, co-founder of Kit & Kin, explains, "People are being misled on their journey to creating a more toxic-free and sustainable home. It’s not enough for a product to claim it’s natural or sustainable, we need to look beyond the packaging. The real story is in the ingredients list."

Here are some key ingredients to avoid when shopping for baby skincare:

Phthalates: Often hidden in synthetic fragrances, phthalates are linked to hormone disruption, allergies, and breathing issues — yet they still appear in some “gentle” baby products.

Parabens: Used as preservatives, parabens like methylparaben and propylparaben can irritate delicate skin and interfere with hormone function.

Chlorine: Common in nappy bleaching and cleaning products, chlorine can irritate sensitive skin and airways and release harmful compounds into the environment. Choosing nappies labeled Totally Chlorine-Free (TCF) helps avoid this.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS): A harsh foaming agent that can strip natural oils and irritate skin, eyes, and hair. A gentler alternative is Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES); Kit & Kin uses a plant-based version of this.

Chris emphasises, "It’s not enough for a product to claim it’s eco-friendly — you have to look at the ingredients to know if it’s truly safe and non-toxic."

When picking baby skincare, always check the ingredient list carefully and avoid these harmful chemicals to keep your baby’s skin safe and healthy.

Pro tip: Do a patch test first. Apply a small amount on your baby’s arm or leg, wait 24 hours, and check for any reaction before using widely.

Best baby face creams and moisturisers FAQs

When to introduce baby moisturisers and lotions?

The NHS suggests waiting a few weeks before using lotions and creams on your baby’s skin to allow it to adjust naturally. Once your baby is a bit older, introducing a gentle face cream or moisturiser can make a big difference. These products not only protect and soothe their skin but also turn bathtime into a special bonding time. Just imagine massaging your little one while applying lotion, it's a beautiful moment for both of you!
Research shows that baby massage helps parents feel more attached to their babies and more eager to care for them. It can also have a positive impact on a mother’s mental health.

What should I know about my baby’s skin?

Your baby’s skin is delicate and needs gentle care all year round. "The skin of a full-term healthy newborn baby is 30% thinner than that of an adult," explains midwife Lesley Gilchrist. Premature or unwell babies have even thinner skin, making them more vulnerable to irritation and damage.

Babies lose moisture much faster than adults, up to 3 to 5 times more, due to a natural process called Trans Epidermal Water Loss. Lesley emphasises, “The first few months of a newborn’s life show the highest rate of TEWL, so a good skincare routine implemented from birth is crucial." Using baby-specific products that hydrate and protect helps support skin development and reduce dryness, keeping your baby’s skin soft and healthy no matter the season.
