How Mother&Baby tested and selected the best play mats and gyms on the market in 2025.
Here at Mother&Baby, we know how important it is to find the right play mat or baby gym to keep your tot happy and engaged. As mums ourselves, we know parents want something that’s more than just cute. That's why we've asked our team of Mother&Baby expert testers to evaluate each one. By using expert advice and guidance, and where possible our own experience as mums, we're here to guide you through the choices and give you honest feedback so you can make the right decision for you.
How were the play mats and gyms tested?
Our 15 parent testers tried and reviewed 10 out of 14 of these baby gyms and play mats over the period of a month, with babies from newborn age up to active toddlers. The play gyms were tested in homes so they could get a feel for how they worked in real-life settings. They then sent their honest review of the play mats and gyms to Mother&Baby, along with ratings for specific factors and an overall rating. By testing multiple play gyms, we've been able to find those best suited to individual needs, and for a range of budgets.
Any product that hasn't yet been reviewed is either on its way to one of our trusted testers or currently undergoing testing. We’ll share authentic parent reviews with you as soon as the testing process is complete.
What were the play mats and gyms tested for?
Each play gym was assessed on the following factors and given a score out of 5, according to our rating scale below.
Design – Does the design actually hold a baby’s attention? Testers checked whether the colours and design actually captured their child’s attention, especially for babies who respond best to bold, high-contrast visuals. They looked at whether the accessories and design would help with those important early milestones like tummy time, rolling, reaching, and grasping.
Durability – Were the materials tough enough for daily use? Was the padding soft and comfy? Could it keep kids entertained beyond the baby stage and maybe even into toddlerhood?
Value for money – What extras were included? Accessories like hanging toys, mirrors, flashcards, lights, and sounds were all tested to see if they added real value (or were just ignored after a day).
Ease of use – And of course, practicality matters too because no one wants a time-consuming setup or something that’s a nightmare to clean. So we made sure to factor in how easy each product was to assemble, wash, move around, and store.
What our scores mean
Each play gym was rated out of five in each category according. Only play mats and gyms that scored consistently well across all categories made our final list:
⭐ 1 – Poor: Didn’t meet expectations in this area at all. Major drawbacks or complex set-up made it hard to recommend.
⭐ 2 – Fair: Some useful features but significant issues. Might work for some, but we found better options.
⭐ 3 – Good: Did the job reasonably well, with a few flaws. Solid choice to meet basic needs but didn’t stand out.
⭐ 4 – Very good: Impressive performance with only minor drawbacks. A reliable, high-quality option.
⭐ 5 – Excellent: Outstanding in this category. Engaging, easy to set up and durable — the best we tested.

When you become a parent, you suddenly find that you're responsible for playing, engaging and entertaining your little one. And it can be A LOT. Sometimes, you want to just sit down with a cup of tea and take a break from games of Peekaboo or playing with rattles. If that sounds familiar, take it from me, you need a play gym in your life.
When I had my first baby, our friends brought us a play mat. When I had my second, it was the first thing I put on my baby shower gift list. The best baby play mats and gyms may not be as essential as a car seat or pram, but having a safe, comfy spot to pop your baby down, where they can be entertained and engaged, can be a total sanity-saver.

As child development expert and founder of the Good Play Guide, Dr. Amanda Gummer says, "Play mats are great in providing a safe and comfortable space for babies to explore and develop important skills. They offer sensory stimulation, with different textures, colours, and patterns to engage babies' senses."
Research from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development shows that babies who get regular floor time, especially tummy time, often reach milestones like sitting, starting to crawl, and walking earlier than those who don’t.
But with so many options out there, how do you know which one’s worth it? We’ve rounded up the best baby play gyms and mats of 2025, all tested by real parents. Plus, we consulted Dr. Amanda Gummer and Paediatric Occupational Therapist, Rachel Coley MS OT/L, to help you know what to look for when choosing the right one for your baby.

While it may lean towards the pricier side, parents rave about its creativity, featuring charming fireflies that light up with a gentle touch and an endearing wigwam design that complements any nursery décor. One mum reviewer says, "I have to say it has been a fab purchase for us. My baby stares lovingly at the fox and owl and smiles and giggles at them."
With over 17 developmental activities, this mat accompanies your baby through all their major milestones, from lying and playing to sitting up. This mum says her 13-and-a-half-week-old baby has learnt to swipe at the little cloud handle and can now grab it! She says it'll take him a little longer to start pulling it, of course!
This play mat doesn't have as many features as others on the market. However, it is still a great gift to add to your baby's wish list with heaps of story-time appeal. This mum's tot loved interacting with the mat's adorable fox and owl characters. Parents think it's perfect for tummy time as well, as it drops down and will continue to entertain babies when they can sit up. "I have taken off the hedgehog and attached it to his bouncer," says Mum, "so detachable toys are another plus."

This is a game-changer in the world of playmats! This innovative design offers more than just a soft surface for playtime; it's also reversible, doubling its functionality and longevity. Suitable for children from two to six years old, it comes with a pack of flashcards and an interactive app, adding a unique and engaging element to playtime.
Our Senior Digital Writer, Samantha Ball, raves about this product, saying, "I absolutely love this playmat!" She describes how it has become a beloved part of her children's morning routine. Instead of reaching for the TV remote, her kids eagerly gravitate towards the mat, where they spend hours immersed in imaginative play. From the ease of cleaning (a lifesaver with two kids, says Samantha) to the comfortable surface, making it ideal for kneeling, lying, or sitting, it's great for letting children's creativity flourish!
Our mum tester said, "From an educational point of view, I think it ticks a lot of boxes that other playmats don’t, and children are not limited to how they interact with the mat, and as they get older they can play different games with the cards." She does wish the cards were made from a thicker or more durable material though, saying, "they are quite easy to bend, and they aren’t waterproof like the mat, so if any spillages happen they wouldn’t be protected." She also points out that the mat is quite heavy and bulky to store, so it's best to keep it out, and the reversible nature of the mat makes it more functional for this, too, but the size and weight make it less easy to clean. The product is a bit pricey, but the patterned side extends the life of this playmat, making it better value for money, she says.

Parents love its stylish look - Louise says, “This product is not only beautiful to look at and looks fab in his nursery, but it also entertains him,” with her baby loving the koala bear and monkey toys. However, while the gentle, earthy colours create a soothing environment, some parents note that babies who prefer brighter, more stimulating play mats may lose interest faster.
With over 20 interactive features, including plush toys, wooden rings, and a dream catcher mirror, it offers plenty for babies to explore, while still looking elegant in any home. Testers appreciate the well-cushioned, extra-large mat that’s safe for play on any floor, though its size may be a drawback in smaller spaces. Despite this, many mums praise its attractive design and variety of sensory elements, making it a stylish and multifunctional addition to any nursery.

Best baby playmat for sensory development

This adaptable play gym grows with your child, featuring adjustable walls that can contain baby or transform into a ball pit for toddlers, providing years of fun. One reviewer praised this versatility, saying, "I really like this baby gym. Initially, we used it as a flat activity mat, but my son began rolling over and crawling early, so it's been useful to have sides that can go up and down so that he can't escape easily."
Parents praise its bright, engaging design and range of sensory-driven toys, with Jodie noting, "The product has a good range of accessories that are sensory driven for small children… my child enjoyed playing with these," and appreciating how easy it is to assemble and pack away.
The unisex, jungle theme is a hit with parents planning for more kids, and with features like an electric toucan, soft elephant, monkey bead chaser, leaf-shaped teethers, and 5-in-1 functionality, one mum calls it “a bargain.”
However, some reviewers found the mat wasn’t very soft, so extra padding may be needed on hard floors, and the sides of the ball pit aren't especially sturdy. The canopy and certain attachments can also be fiddly to set up, but the mat's versatility and engaging features make it a popular choice for families looking for a long-lasting, adaptable play gym

With three detachable toys for on-the-go fun, it offers convenience and entertainment wherever you go. The bright colours and engaging design captivate babies' attention, while the large discovery mirror sparks curiosity and self-awareness. One mum reviewer loved how easy the detachable frame was to place anywhere, and the portable toys that fit conveniently in pockets or purses for emergency distractions.
Some parents may feel this mat isn't as padded and that it comes with fewer toys than others on the market. Plus, the slightly smaller and more compact size than other baby gyms means less space for movement. However, this doesn't put parents off at all! One reviewer says, "Size-wise, it's ideal. Not too big and bulky, and easy to slide under the sofa or behind it when not in use." With its handy and compact design, Freddie the Firefly Gym is a must-have for parents seeking both convenience and developmental support for their little ones. Best play gym for sustainability

thelittlegreensheep.co.uk
Shortlisted for 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for Best Baby Toy.
The Little Green Sheep play gym is crafted from natural Birch wood and finished with oil, making it a top pick for families seeking a sustainable, non-toxic play space. While parents love its beautifully made, organic wooden frame and detachable cotton and wooden toys - Ruth says it “really did make life easier” - it’s worth noting that this is just a frame and doesn’t include a mat. The toys are safe for babies to bat and chew, come in various themes, and can be hand-washed or wiped clean, though they are not machine washable. Our mum tester, Ruth, found that it entertained her baby more than other toys; "This product was a fantastic addition to our toy collection. Our baby was so in love with it that she would play with it a lot longer than most of her other toys, allowing us to do simple tasks around the house".
Some busy families may find cleaning the toys less convenient, and the gym’s lifespan is relatively short, as babies who are already crawling may outgrow it quickly. Michelle adds, “It is a lovely, very well-made toy which I am sure would entertain a small baby," but she got limited use once her child started crawling, though the rattling teether toy proved handy beyond the play gym itself.

Best baby play mat for size

The Infantino Fold & Go Giant Discovery Mat is perfect for families wanting a large, padded play space - it offers over two square metres of thick comfort with a bright, sensory-rich design.
Mum tester Rosie found it ideal for tummy time and play, saying, "It’s been a great mat for tummy time…comfortable and a really generous size," though she notes it might not suit smaller homes. The mat includes engaging textures, a large mirror, and animal friends, plus it folds up easily for travel.
While many parents love the ample space and washing-machine-friendly design, some note the padding isn't quite thick enough for hard floors, and the mat's back isn't very wipeable, so it may not be the best choice for outdoor use. Why are play mats and play gyms good for babies?
Rachel Coley tells us that play mats are a great choice if you're looking to put baby down for a bit; "When putting your baby down for a few minutes, a play gym or play mat is a better option for your child’s development than an infant swing, rocker or bouncy seat, or similar pieces of equipment. It’s okay to use that type of baby gear in moderation, but because they restrict movement, I encourage parents to default to using a play gym or play mat first when it’s a practical option for putting your baby down."
When chosen carefully, the best play gyms and mats can have the following benefits for your baby:
Learning about 'cause and effect': Activity mats can help your baby from the time they are firstborn. At around six weeks, they will help your baby start to develop cause and effect as they realise that if they push the toys on the hanging mobile, they will move.
Developing your baby's vision: Your baby is born with pretty blurred vision, meaning they can only see a few inches before their face. As they grow, they'll start to take an interest in different shapes and colours, which means most playmats are designed with various bright, eye-catching toys for your baby to focus on.
Developing grasping skills: You'll already have noticed your baby's grasping skills - reflexively grabbing onto anything in their palms. As your baby grows up, you'll notice your little one reaching and grasping at the toys hanging on the mobile, even if they aren't interested in them when you first introduce the mat.
Developing self-awareness: Another feature you'll spot on many play gyms on this list is a small mirror. Your baby probably won't notice themself in the mirror until they're around four months old, when you might notice them starting to reach up at it. As they grow, your baby will interact more with their reflection in the mirror, making faces and smiling at themself.
Developing motor skills: Stimulating toys from activity gyms are great for your baby's development but also for use during tummy time. You should always use a playmat or blanket for tummy time, not a sofa or raised surface. Tummy time is important for helping your baby develop those all-important fine motor skills. Lie with your baby and encourage them to look up at you or the toys hanging over the mat.

Best play mats and gyms: Buying Guide
Things to look for when choosing the right baby play mat and play gym
Material: You'll want soft and padded materials to enrich their sensory time, which is easy to wash if necessary.
Size: As long as it's large enough to grow with them but not too big for your space, it should work for you.
Easy to clean: Things can get messy with little ones, so make sure it's as easy to clean as possible.
Sensory features: Try to pick out a playmat or gym that has engaging and stimulating features that they'll love.
Colours: Make sure your chosen baby play mat is designed to stimulate your baby. As Rachel Coley explains, "it’s important to evaluate the 'look' of a play gym or play mat from a baby’s perspective instead of prioritising one that fits your style or that matches your nursery decor. Consider whether the suspended toys would be interesting to a newborn who can only see high contrast - like black and white - and a baby a few months older whose colour vision is developing but is limited to highly saturated colours rather than light shades."
Age range: Your choice will have to be age-appropriate for your little one, so check the packaging. There are many types of baby playmats, but choose a flat one because it's better for your baby's back. Also, you need to look for one that gives you space to hang many types of toys with different textures, sounds, colours, and shapes, not only above your baby's head, but in their surroundings.
Playmat: Some gyms have much bigger playmats than others, so think about how much floor space you have available, as well as how big and active your baby is. Dribbles and leaks are unavoidable, so a detachable, machine-washable mat is essential.
Baby-safe mirror: A mirror is a must – looking at themself will encourage your baby's face-recognition skills and boost their social and emotional development. Add one to the gym yourself if it doesn't already have one.
Toy arch: Opt for a lot of variety when it comes to sensory toys to hold your baby's interest as they get older. Black-and-white patterns might delight a newborn but not a four-month-old. Rachel notes that it's good to look at whether the toys can be moved and changed; "Flexibility in the placement and types of toys that can be suspended is really important to keep play fresh and to encourage different skills at different stages".
Musical features: Babies love music, but check you can turn this function off because the tunes will eventually get on your nerves!
Extra toys: Some gyms are designed to allow you to attach other toys to the hanging bar to keep your baby's interest. If your tot is inquisitive or easily bored, this is a great option.
Sensory activities: Many gyms have different sensory elements for your baby to explore, from peek-a-boo flaps, which can help boost fine motor skills, to crinkly-textured toys. When you're comparing gyms, think about whether the features will stimulate different senses.
Tummy-time pillow: Time spent lying on their front every day is important to help your baby strengthen the muscles they'll eventually use for sitting, crawling, and walking. Tummy-time features or a dedicated pillow for extra support are useful.

Best baby play mats and gyms: Our verdict
After months of testing these baby gyms and play mats with their little ones, our mum testers found some firm favourites. The Rock Stepper Reversible Playmat was a standout, becoming a regular part of playtime and even helping to reduce screen time. In contrast, while the Tiny Love Luxe Developmental Gymini looked gorgeous and suited a neutral décor, it didn’t keep babies quite as engaged as some of the brighter, more interactive designs.
The Skip Hop Celestial Dreams Activity Gym scored highly for its sturdy frame and soft padding, making it feel safe and comfy. Meanwhile, the Bright Starts 5-in-1 Activity Gym lost points for being a bit awkward to set up and for a mat that wasn’t quite soft enough.
Baby play mats and gyms 2025 FAQs
Baby play mat vs play gym
Baby gyms and play mats are often sold together, but serve slightly different purposes. A play mat is a soft, padded surface where your baby can lie and explore safely. Many mats have eye-catching designs, textures, and interactive elements sewn on to stimulate your baby’s senses, like the Infantino Fold & Go Giant Discovery Mat. Some mats are reversible or foldable, even with raised edges to create a contained play area, like Infantino Foldable Soft Foam Mat.
A baby gym is typically an arch or frame placed over the mat, from which toys hang. These toys encourage babies to reach, kick, and grasp, helping develop motor skills and sensory awareness. For example, the Fisher-Price Deluxe Kick & Play Piano Gym combines a soft mat with interactive musical toys overhead.
How to choose: Baby gym or play mat?
Child development expert Dr. Amanda says both are beneficial, so your choice depends on your space and personal preference.
Tips from Dr. Amanda:
• Choose a mat or gym with a soft, padded surface for comfort and safety.
• Make sure the size fits your home and isn’t a trip hazard.
• Consider detachable toys or hanging mobiles if you want to keep baby engaged.
• Play mats are great for tummy time and provide a safe spot for lying on front or back.
• Gyms encourage interaction with hanging toys, helping hand-eye coordination.
Modern vs traditional baby gyms
Baby gyms generally come in two styles: modern minimalist designs and traditional, feature-packed versions.
• Modern gyms have simple, sleek looks and neutral colours, fitting nicely into stylish, clutter-free homes. They often have fewer toys and distractions.
• Traditional gyms are full of bright colours, sounds, flashing lights, and lots of toys to keep babies entertained and engaged.
Most babies tend to enjoy the stimulating toys of traditional gyms, but preferences vary. Dr. Amanda explains, "Play mats with sound and lights can provide valuable sensory stimulation, helping babies engage and develop. However, some babies may find bright lights or loud noises overwhelming. Look for mats with adjustable volume and brightness to suit your baby’s preferences."
Do you need a foldable gym?
You’ll likely use a baby gym multiple times a day for around six months. If space is tight, choose one that’s easy to fold away and set up again. If you plan to travel or visit relatives, portability is a big plus.
