If you have a toddler, at some point, you're going to have to deal with that major milestone: potty training. Once those toddler nappies have gone, there's no getting away from it, but picking the right potty can make the whole process much less stressful for both of you—that and a good carpet cleaner!

While accidents, mess, and tears are almost inevitable with potty training, choosing the right potty for your little one can make all the difference. The first thing to do is make sure the potty is right for your tot's age and stage. While the NHS suggest introducing a potty around 18 months to just sit on, your child may not be ready to use it until they are older and that is fine. Just follow their lead.

In this article:

FAQs

When it comes to potties, there’s a lot of choice out there - from simple plastic potties and toilet seats, to ones with removable bowls, and ones that flush (yes they do exist!) the options are endless. As a mum of two, I've gone through the entire process twice and used a different potty each time, so I know a thing or two about how the right one can make all the difference. For expert advice, we spoke with child and toilet training expert and founder of My Carry Potty, Amanda Jenner. We asked her what to look for when choosing the best potty for your toddler. She also offers us some tips on how to make potty training easier for your toddler later in the article.

SA Products Kids Potty Training Toilet Seat with Splash Guard

Best potty overall

Expert rating:
5.0
Trying out the SA Potty with its toilet roll holder
Mother&Baby

This mini-toilet potty comes with a cheery face to make it even more appealing to little ones. Our tester found this extra novelty made her two-year-old very keen to use it: "The potty has a very fun, cheery face design, which delighted my little girl no end. She helped me unbox it and immediately wanted to sit on it."

Our tester also liked the height of the toilet which she found more comfortable for her daughter saying "this potty has a brilliant height to it and it means she can sit comfortably and at a 90 degree angle just like a normal toilet."

The pretend flush handle doesn't move, but our tester did rate the retractable toilet roll holder, which means you can always have a toilet roll to hand. Unlike some of the others on our list, this one doesn’t have storage space for a pack of wipes.

When your child is ready to transition from the potty to using the big toilet, the seat can be used separately on top of a normal toilet. The pan itself is also removable and easy to clean, though our tester found it a little tricky to take out.

There’s an integrated splash guard at the front, which, while useful, can get in the way when your toddler sits on it. "The only downside I can see to this is the fact that you have to move the splash guard into position before the child uses the potty and then return it to its original position, or the lid will not close properly." If this does get annoying, it is easily removed but for this reason, this potty may be better suited for girls than boys.

Pote Plus My First WC

Best potty with a fun flush

Testing the Pote Plus My First WC
Mother&Baby

Designed to look like a mini toilet for tots, potty training just got that little bit easier. This one comes complete with a pretend flusher, but what we love most is that the 'cistern' is actually a handy storage holder for wet wipes or toilet paper.

It's not all style over substance, our mum tester Hannah said: "It is easy to empty and clean and even sounds like a real toilet with a flush button. My little boy had a traditional potty that he would not go near for some reason, and now loves going to the potty like a big boy. It comes in three different colours and is the perfect size for toddlers and even features a flip-up lid."

Our tester used it for over a month and commented that it's the perfect height for a toddler to sit on, "higher than a standard potty so a more natural, comfy sitting position." It's also sturdy and robust and the flash/flush mechanism did the trick for our tester's three-year-old son. At first, she thought it was "a gimmick, but it made using the potty really fun for him. The potty gave him initial confidence to wee in and build up to using it to poo."

This product won Gold for Best Potty Training Product in the Mother&Baby Awards 2023.

Best portable potty

Expert rating:
4.5
mother&baby
Price: $36.99

Developed by toilet training expert Amanda Jenner, My Carry Potty is a handy, portable, leak-proof potty. It comes in a range of fun designs and colours, so your tot can choose their favourite.

All our testers seem to agree with its leakproof claim, with one mum saying: "I tested it with water first, and not a drip came out. It has been amazing in situations where it's not easy to empty immediately, such as when we were at the park without a toilet. We could just use it in a discreet place and then shut it and empty it at home."

It’s as easy to use this potty at home as it is on the go, meaning it really is portable and easy to carry around. It's as discreet as it can be and could be mistaken for a small stroller and being able to use it at home and away means your toddler can have consistency in their training. One tester said: “My toddler likes using this at home and when we go out, and it’s great that he can practise with the same thing wherever we go so there’s no anxiety.”

One small thing our tester would change is for the lid to be hinged in some way so that it stays open in an upright position. "My daughter likes to use it with the lid resting against something so she can sit back against it, and sometimes that isn't possible, so the lid just had to fall back onto the floor and take up more room." She also thought a small integrated compartment for wipes or toilet rolls would be a great addition when out and about.

This product won Silver for Best Potty Training Product at the Mother&Baby Awards 2023.

The potty has anti-slip feet, which means it doesn't skid about on hard floors. It is enticing for little ones to use and makes potty training easier."

One reviewer added, "The Infantino Potty Pals Potty is a game-changer for parents navigating the potty training journey with their little ones. " However, another reviewer commented that it is smaller than expected and said they "can't use it for a long time."

Overall it is a simple but effective potty, suitable from 18 months and with a cute but practical design. We also love how easy it is to assemble.

Best eco-friendly potty

Eco Pourty Potty
The Eco Pourty Potty
Pourty Potty

A classic potty with a simple but effective design that lends itself to easy cleaning and no-fuss training. It's a sturdy, long-lasting potty that has won plenty of fans, including Mother&Baby's Rebecca Lancaster, who used it with both her children. "This potty is no frills, but it's incredibly easy to clean, and you can pour the waste down the toilet efficiently. It's so strong and well-made that it's currently being used by its fourth child and is still in near-new condition."

Our other mum testers agreed that the Pourty Potty is easy to use and praised the easy-pour element, which reduces mess. One mum tester noted that this has the added benefit of stopping the potty from being 'suctioned' onto the bottom - "the channel at the back of the Potty removed the issue with other potties of them forming a seal when used and lifting off the floor when my little one stood up."

Mums also felt it was more comfortable for their children than others they'd tried, saying "This potty is easy to use and I love that the rim of the seat is quite wide and much more comfortable for her to sit on. It doesn’t leave too much of a red mark on her legs as she loves to sit on it and watch TV."

The potty is so durable that it can be passed on once you've finished with it, and our mum testers appreciated its eco credentials. One said, "I loved the company's ethos and reduced environmental impact the potty has. Something I never considered before having this potty is what happens at the end of its life cycle." The only downside our mum testers found was the lack of colour options.

Pros

  • Channel at the back makes it easy to pour out waste
  • Simple design makes it easy to clean - no crevices
  • Durable and strong material
  • Made of recycled material and is recyclable at the end of its life
  • High splash guard
  • Comfortable, wide seat

Best potty for stylish design

Expert rating:

The sleek and stylish eggloo Potty is available in three muted colours and is suitable for little ones from 6 to 36 months. With a soft, cushioned seat and backrest, it makes potty training as comfortable as possible for tots. In contrast, the removable inner bowl makes it easy for parents to clean, and the anti-splash feature means minimal mess.

The non-slip base prevents nasty accidents or falls, keeping your tot safe and stable while on the potty. When not in use, the lightweight and portable potty stores neatly away with the lid on and can even double up as a stool to stand on, making hand washing easier.

Pros

  • A stylish alternative to the traditional potty
  • Can be used as a stool when the lid is down

The Potette Max

Best 3-in-1 potty

Expert rating:
3.5
Potette PlusMOTHER&BABY/Laura Healy

The Potette Max has a 3-in-1 design, making it one of the most practical of all the potties we’ve tested. You can use it with the hard bowl at home to empty into the toilet or as a travel potty with biodegradable liners and a travel bag. You can also fold it down and use it as a seat on top of a toilet. This saves you money in the long run and you can use it with your kids at different stages, as tester Sikha noted, "As the mum of a recently potty-trained toddler, and a slightly older child too, this product is brilliant. We use it primarily as a child seat for the toilet when we're out and about, and both kids find it comfy and ready to use. It is ready to clean and packs up really small. The carry bag is useful. We have also used it as an emergency potty when we've been caught short and had to pull over while driving."

Our tester Zoe mentioned that the plastic insert could do with being made slightly deeper for kids, especially if they are doing a poo, and Carly thought it would be better if it came with more liners.

When purchasing this potty, you’ll get three liners, with more potty liners available at an additional cost. Our Commercial Content Writer, Laura Healy, says, "This is a great travel potty and it saved us a few times when we were too far from a public toilet. It is also useful at home as a toilet seat, and we sometimes used it as a seat in particularly unpleasant public toilets. This was useful especially as my daughter tends to hold onto the seat. It's easy to clean and extremely lightweight; I could even fit it in my nappy bag when folded."

Like the Pote Plus My First WC, tested above, the My Real Potty is a miniature toilet-style potty with a flushing sound, making it perfect to use for role playing with tots. There’s a storage space for a pack of wipes at the back of the potty and our mum tester Sally said: "This potty really is amazing! It is such a lovely addition to any bathroom/living room or wherever in your house a potty needs to be! It looks very comfortable, and my little one was very happy with it. The flushing is a great feature and such a fun thing for the children to be able to do as a reward after they do their business."

Our Commercial Content Writer, Laura Healy, says, "It's ideal to help avoid any fear around using a toilet. I love the storage space at the back for wipes, and of course, the sound effects are extremely fun. It is quite big, though, so it takes up space and is not portable."

Our tester Katie mentioned that inserting the batteries to create the flush sound effect was unnecessarily fiddly. While the kids loved it, parents got a little annoyed with the flushing sound. Another tester, Suzanne, would have preferred it to be less bulky and more portable for use on the go.

Expert potty training advice

When to start potty training?

Every child is different and they may learn to control their bladder and bowels at a different age. Check if your little one is showing signs of readiness first" says Amanda. She also advises that you "talk to your little one two weeks before you start potty training as this will give them a better understanding of what they are about to do".

Timing is also important if you're deciding when to start potty training, so "choose your time wisely and do not start if you have moved house, been poorly, changed nursery, or a new family member has arrived." If your child doesn’t seem ready for potty training, wait until they’re a little older - a few months can make a big difference.

How to start potty training?

• Watch for potty training signs that your toddler is ready to start. If they show take an interest when you go to the toilet, notice when they've done a poo or have a wet nappy, they are ready.

• Amanda advises to "ditch the nappy/pull-ups and go to potty training pants, as this will get them potty trained quicker." There are lots of other potty training products that will make the journey easier.

• Choose a good potty spot where they can see it and get used to it. This could be the family bathroom, so when they follow you in, they can copy you by pulling their pants down and sitting on it.

• Plan to officially start potty training when you're at home for a few days, like over a long weekend.

• Encourage them to sit on the potty after every meal, perhaps pretend to use the toilet at the same time.

• Let them master how to wee in the potty first, then move on to poo.

• Make it fun. Don't compare your situation to anyone else's or put pressure on yourself or your tot. Praise them when they use the potty.

• When accidents happen, stay calm and carry on.

• Lastly, be patient.

What are the different types of potties?

Potty training toilet seat – If you're keen to get them used to using the real toilet and getting to grips with the bathroom space, then a potty training toilet seat could be a good way to start. These make the seat smaller for little bottoms but you'll also need a small step stool so they can get on independently.

Plastic potty – The most basic form of a potty you're probably most familiar with and often the most affordable. If you're keen to have a few potties around the home, then a budget plastic potty might be the best option for you.

Travel potty – Whether you're planning a family holiday or you're always on the road with your toddler, a potty that you can easily travel with is a must-have. It will also make park visits easier and avoids stress if you can't find a toilet in the shopping centre for instance.

Removable bowl potty – With multiple parts, these potties have a removable bowl which you can take out and clean. Some have a separate which can sit over the toilet for when they get a bit older.

Buying guidance

Some features to consider when choosing a potty:

Weight – If you want your child to be able to carry their potty independently, then opt for a lighter option.

Size – As potties will most likely be used when your toddler is around the age of two, it's important to make sure it's small enough for them to use in terms of the seat. You'll also want to consider how much space you have for a potty as some take up more space than others.

Comfort – No toddler will sit somewhere they aren't comfortable. Especially when it comes to having a number two, it's important for your toddler to want to sit on it for a while.

Ease of use – There are so many designs on the market but it's worth thinking about what is going to be easiest for your little one to use.

Cleaning – With the more basic potties, you simply need to pour out the waste and clean the bowl, which you can do in minutes. These smaller potties are fine if they're sit down well, but if you're potty training a boy, you may prefer a potty with a splash guard to avoid any messy accidents.

Toddler appeal – It's important that your toddler gets excited about their potty. Amanda says when it comes to choosing a potty for your child, it's also "important that your little one has a connection with their potty as they will be the one that is using it." Get your child involved if possible - this will encourage them to use it from the start. "Having fun characters that little one can relate to is key to successful potty training" she adds.

Portability – Whether you're always travelling or your tot spends a lot of time at their grandparents, keeping portability in mind is important. You might also want to opt for a second potty to live at caregivers' homes, or use a travel potty such as the My Carry Potty.

Common potty training challenges and how to overcome them

While the best potty can make your life easier as a parent, and can help your little one to get used to being a big kid and learning how to use the toilet, there are likely to be some setbacks along the way. “Toilet training takes a few weeks to a month on average to master but all children are different," says Amanda, so the chances are you'll have a few setbacks which could include:

• Not wanting to sit on the toilet: It may be that they're not ready. Wait a few weeks and try again. Remember that turning potty training into a battle isn't going to be fun for either of you. Try some reward charts to tempt them into sitting on the potty and keep books or toys near the potty so they're more inclined to sit for longer. Above all else, praise them when they do sit down or go for a wee or poo in the potty.

• Being dry for a while but then wetting themselves: There could be an emotional reason for potty training regression, for instance a big life change like a new baby sibling. Try to be sympathetic, stay calm and keep reminding them to use the potty. The NHS notes that this could be a sign of a bladder infection, constipation, or type 1 diabetes. if you are worried, speak to your GP.

• Having accidents: It's very likely your tot will have a few accidents, but try to keep calm, even if you don’t feel it. “Rather than say ‘don’t worry, it’s okay’, be firm and say ‘that’s not where the poo goes, is it?' or 'that’s not right.' Pick up the poo, pop it in the potty and take it to the toilet so they can see where it should go. It’s much better to say this is right and this is wrong than ‘never mind’. But give them lots of praise and attention when they do get it right.”
