Testing the Obaby Evie 3 Piece Room Set

When it came to thinking about how we wanted our baby's nursery to look, my husband and I felt really overwhelmed. Spend just two minutes on the likes of Pinterest or Instagram and you're met with hundreds of picture-perfect nurseries and the furniture felt like a huge part of this.

While we knew we wanted a matching set, the style and even colour were less difficult to decide on between us. I quite liked the classic all-white options (of which there are a lot of choices) but my husband was less keen. Then we stumbled across Obaby and the Evie 3 Piece Room Set. Also available in pure white, it was the two-tone colourway in cashmere that we both loved and finally decided on.

Delivery and assembly

As we'd expected, there were a lot of boxes when our Evie Room Set was delivered but it was really clear what was what and everything was packaged well, with a lot of the packaging suitable for recycling.

Constructing the nursery set was relatively straightforward. The wardrobe took the longest of the three pieces and my husband commented that the instructions for this could have been a little clearer and that he had to squint to check he had parts the right way round. Aside from that, all of the holes in the wardrobe were pre-drilled well and there was no heavy force required to get the hardware in place.

The cot bed was definitely the easiest to put together and came with just five pieces in total. We were pleased that the slots of the cot didn't need individually screwing in, which saved a lot of time

The assembly of the whole set was manageable for one person apart from when attaching the doors of the wardrobe and holding the cot sides in place.

Design and aesthetic

Once the Evie 3 Piece Room Set had all been built, we spent a lot of time walking around the room and admiring it all. It really is a beautiful set.

We really liked the cot bed from the outset because of the fact that it will grow with our son from birth until approximately four years old with an adjustable three-position base height and a removable side to transform into a toddler bed, making it a really great investment piece. If you're a little short of space, you can also opt for the Evie Mini Cot Bed which is suitable for up to three years and is ideal for those with smaller nurseries.

It requires a suitable mattress measuring 140 x 70cm. We recommend the Obaby Moisture Management Dual Core Mattress, which you can find out more about in our round-up of the best cot mattresses. For an additional cost, you can purchase the optional Evie Under Drawer which offers a handy storage solution, something you can never have too much of as a parent.

Inside the double wardrobe is a single full-width shelf and two rails (which can be removed so you just have one when your youngster gets older and has longer clothes). I really like how much space there is inside, I've already been able to fit a lot of baby clothing and the shelf has been so helpful for storing extra nappies and wipes. I do think it would have been nice for the wardrobe to have been slightly taller as some clothes on the bottom rung drag along the bottom of the wardrobe, even in size 3-6 months. There are handy attachment devices on the back of the wardrobe to prevent tipping the wardrobe and injuries.

The changing unit is possibly one of my favourite parts of the Evie 3 Piece Room Set. It has stylish brass handles (matching those on the wardrobe). The changing area is suitable for a changing mat up to 80 x 46.5cm and can handily be removed once no longer required, leaving a flat top chest of drawers. If I were being picky, it would have been nice if the screws of the changing table top had covers to help them blend in but this is a very small thing. The three drawers are wonderfully deep and lend themselves well to drawer organisers to keep everything nice and tidy.

Final verdict

Overall, we are so delighted with our Evie 3 Piece Room Set. It was 100 per cent the best decision and truly makes our nursery. We love how modern and contemporary it looks while being incredibly practical at the same time and every piece is so high-quality and clearly well-made. The fact that each piece can be adapted to suit your baby as they get older is a huge selling point for us, both economically and environmentally. It's also great to see that Obaby has considered those with smaller spaces with their mini cot plus optional matching accessories like the Evie wall hook, under drawer and cot top changer. I also think the price is incredibly reasonable for what you get.
