What was the inspiration behind Winnie the Pooh?

Purchased from Harrods in London, the original ‘Edward Bear’ was given to Christopher Robin Milne for his first birthday by his mother Daphne on 21 August 1921.

Christopher Milne renamed his toy bear after Winnie, a Canadian black bear he saw at London Zoo, and Pooh, a swan they had encountered while on holiday.

A.A. Milne, Daphne’s husband and Christopher’s father, was so enamoured by the bond he witnessed between the boy and his bear, that he began to write stories of friendship about their journey through life together. And so, the stories of Winnie the Pooh were born!
