It's just a matter of time before your baby starts crawling, exploring and learning to walk, so a baby playpen can quickly become a safe haven of play for them. Choosing the right baby playpen can make a big difference when it comes to keeping your little one safe and secure, while also encouraging their independence.

When choosing a baby playpen, parents should consider the size of the playpen and how much room there is for your child to play, move, and grow. At the same time, if you have a small home, you don't want the playpen to take up the entire living room (unless you can fold it away at the end of the day). Another important factor is durability, as is portability - this is useful if you plan to travel or visit family regularly and take the playpen with you. You may also want to consider one that is versatile for both indoor and outdoor use, especially over the warmer months.

The best baby playpens at a glance

Beyond these practical considerations, it’s equally important to think about how a playpen can support your child’s development. To find out more, we spoke to Dr Amanda Gummer, a renowned neuropsychologist, child development specialist, and founder of The Good Play Guide. She suggests simple ways to transform a playpen into a space that fosters learning and development by using age-appropriate toys that encourage exploration. “Use soft blocks, sensory balls, and interactive toys that light up or make sounds to keep your baby engaged. Rotating toys regularly will maintain their interest. Incorporating books with bright pictures and various textures can also stimulate your baby's senses and support early language development.” Dr Amanda also discusses the benefits of playpens in greater depth later in the article.

Designed for life on the go, this playpen aims to make your life easier and boasts a super-fast 30-second assembly - ideal for home garden or even a family holiday (it weighs less than 6kg). When done, it packs away into its own compact carry bag so you get your room back at the end of the day - great for those with small living spaces.

Best playpen for small spaces

Expert rating:
4.5

The Joie Cheer Playpen is a versatile and stylish option designed for smaller spaces where safety and comfort are priorities. Its square design is practical and features detachable plush toys that engage your baby.

Mum tester Zoe Ward appreciated the playpen's thoughtful features: "The breathable mesh sides are perfect for keeping baby cool, and the zipper allows Aubrey to crawl in and out easily, which is great for both play and supervision. The removable mattress is comfy and doubles as a play surface or napping spot, adding to its versatility." The playpen is easy to assemble and fold into a compact rectangular tube, making it highly portable. This feature is particularly useful for families who travel frequently or need to store the playpen in tight spaces. The included carry handle further enhances its portability, making it a practical choice for trips to visit family or overnight stays.

Despite its many benefits, the playpen is somewhat heavy when folded, which might make it challenging for some parents to carry. She also appreciates the netted sides, which allow for easy visibility, and the zip-open side panel, which offers additional flexibility. The understated grey colour makes it aesthetically pleasing and suitable for any interior, even though it’s a bit bulky and heavy at 15kg.

Best permanent baby playpen

Venture All Stars Duo Foldaway PlaypenMOTHER&BABY

The Venture All Stars Duo Plastic Playpen is a popular option for parents looking for a spacious and secure area for their little ones. Its size is one of its biggest advantages, offering ample space for babies and toddlers to play safely. Mum tester Jasmine highlighted, “This playpen is fantastic. It's very large, so my toddler can play inside it safely with a lot of her toys in there as well. It’s also a handy place to store her toys at the end of the day, which keeps everything tidy.”

Assembling the playpen is straightforward, thanks to the click-together design of the plastic panels. However, the playpen is best suited for use on hard floors, where the suction cups on the feet can stick securely. Dad tester, Ben Clarke shared his experience: “The panels are very light, and if the base isn’t stuck down, a determined little one will be able to move it around the room by pushing."

While the Venture All Stars Duo Playpen is practical for those who plan to keep it up permanently, it’s not ideal for parents who need something more portable. Ben found it "too bulky to store away easily" and noted outdoor use was impossible due to its design. A safety concern arose when his daughter removed an activity panel star, accessing a "choking hazard." Venture promptly replaced the faulty panel, which Ben believes was an isolated "manufacturing fault."

Overall, the Venture All Stars Duo Playpen is a good choice for parents who have the space to keep it set up permanently. Mum tester Jessica said: "I would definitely recommend this playpen to any parent/carer. My baby automatically goes in as he recognises it as his safe, playing space."

This playpen earned the Bronze award for Best Safety Product at the Mother&Baby Awards 2022.

Best baby playpen with wall fitting

best baby playpen BabyDan Baby Playpen With Wall FittingsAmazon

One of the most recognisable and well-loved playpens for years, this BabyDan playpen is functional with an emphasis on safety over style.

It’s a basic design with steel railings, and a padded, washable play mat; one side is a door opening, and the playpen can be attached to the wall or used as a room divider. It’s not the easiest or quickest to assemble, but that’s down to its serious practicality with one reviewer saying: "this is because it is such a sturdy and safe structure once it is built up that it's understandable that it takes a bit of elbow grease to put it together. The mat has cushioned many a tumble, and it has been through the wash a few times now and come out fine. It's really helpful to be able to pop baby in here to play for a short period just to give us a chance to get on with little jobs. She has also helped with her strength as she is supporting herself by holding the bars as she practices standing up."

This brand has been making safety products for babies and children for more than 75 years, so if you’re looking for peace of mind with a safe playpen, this is the one for you.

Pros

  • Very safe and sturdy construction

Koo-di Happy Home Foldaway Playpen

Best baby playpen for travel

Expert rating:
4.0
Best baby playpen Koo-Di Happy Home Foldaway Playpen Spring WaterAmazon

This playpen is easy to assemble or collapse, making it great for travelling on holiday or simply on playdates to friends’ houses; one review said: "Assembly... or rather 'put up' is extremely easy.. just pull out the bars and lift the cross bars. To pack away, the unit easily pushes together and folds up very small (like a small pram).”

It’s blue, making it different from most other playpens, which are generally grey, but no other colours are available. The base is water-resistant, meaning it’s a great option if you want to place it outdoors. Like most mesh playpens, there’s a zipped door for the baby to use, and it’s easy to fold up into the travel bag. However, we think the price is a little on the high side, especially given it doesn’t have any additional features.

Pros

  • It's water-resistant, which means it's harder to stain
  • Easy to put up and down thanks to the click design
  • Mechanisms are hidden away under the padded top to prevent bumps
  • For use inside or outdoor

Cons

  • Limited colour choice

The best adaptable baby playpen

Expert rating:
3.5
MOTHER&BABY

The Vivo playpen is simple and stylish but also super practical. It is really easy to fold away and store when your baby isn't playing in it or moving the sides into different shapes. Out of all the ones we tested, this is the only one that is multi functional meaning and can be set up in 3 different shapes - rectangle, square or hexagon.

Our mum tester Georgia commented on how easy it was to assemble saying, "Aside from fastening two ends together with a screwdriver, everything else involved loosening and tightening brackets, which made the process straightforward and efficient."

She loved the minimalistic design but noted that some of the interlocking plastic parts could use some improvement. She noted that it was heavy if she wanted to move it around as it's made from wood but means it's also a sturdy playpen.

From a design point of view, even though it's multi-functional, one downside our tester found was that it's not suitable for carpeted floors. For the cost, this doesn't make it a very practical option for most family homes.

Pros

  • Great value compared to other wooden playpens
  • Multi-functional can be set up in 3 different shapes and can be used as a room divider or barrier
  • Aesthetic Scandinavian design with well-crafted wood
  • Provides ample space for play
  • Easy to set up and dismantle
  • Wooden construction is different to all others we’ve tested

Cons

  • Heavy and bulky, making it difficult to move or store
  • Not suitable for use on carpeted surfaces

Do you need a playpen for your baby?

Not necessarily but a baby playpen will make your life easier and give your baby a sense of independence at an early age. To use, simply set up your chosen playpen on a flat floor surface, fill it with toys, and watch them play while you do something else on your hefty to-do list (or maybe just have a coffee).

Benefits of a baby playpen

A baby playpen offers benefits for both you and your little one. It provides a safe and secure environment for your child to explore, play, and develop their motor skills, giving you peace of mind. Dr Amanda strongly advocates the use of playpens. She explains, “A baby playpen provides a safe, enclosed space where your baby can explore independently, which is crucial for building confidence and fostering early motor skills. Having a designated space for play promotes a sense of routine, which is beneficial for emotional and cognitive development.” A good playpen:

Encourages independent play: A safe playpen can help foster independence which is so important for developing motor skills and creativity. It's also helpful for babies to learn to entertain themselves.

Creates a safe space: Babies can explore, crawl and pull themselves up without risk of hurting themselves near objects or furniture they shouldn't be near.

Portable: Playpens are great to take on weekends away and when traveling. Some can be used in the garden, in parks and even on the beach making them a handy, safe and familiar setting for little ones. You can also find travel cots that double as playpens if you're looking for a versatile option.

Great for play dates: If you've got twins or like arranging play dates, a playpen can give parents peace of mind when babies are inside together. Little ones will slowly learn to interact with other babies and develop their social skills.

Creates familiarity: A baby will learn to associate their playpen with learning and fun. They'll know what toys can be found inside and understand that their parent or caregiver is never too far away.

Things to consider before buying a baby playpen

• Safety - Only buy a playpen with the BS EN 12227:1997, 1999, or 2010 safety mark. This crucial certification confirms that the product meets British and European safety standards, providing you with peace of mind that it has undergone thorough testing for and is therefore safe for your little one.

• Size and space – If you've not got much room, it maybe worth looking for a smaller one or one that folds away. There's no point buying something that won't fit. For families with space, the Venture All Stars Duo Foldaway Playpen is perfect, offering a spacious and can become a permanent and sturdy play area for larger rooms.

• Material and durability – These self-contained units are usually made from wood, plastic (easy to clean) or metal (more durable).

• Portability and storage – Most baby playpens are lightweight, so they can be easily carried around the house and stored away when not in use. Compact designs are handy for easy storage like the Ickle Bubba Fiesta.

• Ease of cleaning – Look for plastic ones or those that come with wipeable surfaces, removable mats, and machine-washable fabrics.

• Safety and visibility – Look for playpen models featuring mesh sides or spaced slats for optimal airflow and easy visibility like the Koo-di playpen or Tutti Bambina Hexa Playpen.

• Comfort – Ideally you want your little one to explore in a safe and comfortable space with padded and smooth edges.

• Features/accessories - any extra that comes with a playpen are a bonus like activity panels and sunshades.

• Price and brand – As with anything, the more premium models come with more features so consider what's really important to you and also how long you want your child to use the playpen. If you're planning another child, a sturdy, durable one will last until they grow out of it too. The Joie Cheer Playpen delivers the best value for money, featuring excellent add-ons at a reasonable price. It is particularly suitable for smaller spaces with its detachable plush toys that toddlers love. For a budget-friendly option, the Venture All Stars Joy Baby Playpen is a good choice for parents.

Important safety considerations for baby playpens

• Never leave child alone and unsupervised in a playpen (even if they're strapped into a bouncer or rocker).

• Make sure there are no large items inside the playpen that your baby can step on to and use to climb out

• Never leave a playpen near an open fire or other heat sources

• Don't tie anything across the top of a playpen, and keep any dangling cords or cables away as this is a strangulation hazard.

• Never leave a playpen near doors or windows that can be opened

• Make sure that the playpen is in good condition with no holes or broken pieces of wood or plastic

How long can you leave a baby in a playpen?

Dr Amanda cautions about the potential downsides of overusing a playpen: “While playpens are useful, excessive use can limit physical activity and reduce interactions with caregivers, which are crucial for development.” To mitigate these risks, she advises that the playpen should be just one part of your baby’s daily routine. “Ensure that your baby engages in varied activities, including tummy time, floor play, and outdoor exploration. Always supervise your baby in the playpen and check that it is free from hazards like loose parts or small objects that could pose a choking risk.” By using the playpen in moderation and balancing it with other forms of play, you can support your baby’s overall growth and development effectively.

FAQs playpens

What age to start using a baby playpen?

You can introduce a playpen once your baby can sit up and move around, typically around 6 to 8 months old.

What age do you stop using playpens?

This depends on the parents. When a toddler is confident walking on their own, they may not stay in the playpen or they may start to climb out of it which could be dangerous. Some may still like playing inside freely up until they are 3 years old.

Can I use a second-hand playpen for my baby?

Avoid buying a used playpen if possible, as several popular baby playpens have been recalled over the years. It's better to buy a new one to keep your baby safe or at least research the second-hand model to make sure they are still deemed safe for use.

Can I use a playpen outdoors?

Yes many playpens can be used outside too as some are water resistant but even plastic ones are good to use on soft grass. If you're unsure, check the manufacturer's guidelines.

How do I clean a baby playpen?

Wipe it down with a damp cloth. If you want to give it a really good clean, dismantle it, spray with a child-friendly disinfect and clean with a soft cloth.

Are playpens recommended for babies?

Yes for babies around the 8 month mark or when they start to crawl. Babies need a lot of time sitting on your lap, cuddling, active play time and the chance to move so encourage them to roll, reach, push, pull and more.

How to make a playpen more comfortable?

Some playpens come with padding and you can add play mats or layer blankets but ensure they are tucked away securely. Always keep an eye on your baby while they play inside the playpen.

Should babies sleep in playpens?

No. It's always a good idea to put a baby to bed in their cot or crib. This establishes a good sleep routine.

These links allow us to continue offering valuable consumer advice, without compromising the integrity of our reviews. We are always honest in our reviews, and we won't recommend products that we wouldn't spend our own money on.

How we write our articles and reviews
Mother & Baby is dedicated to ensuring our information is always valuable and trustworthy, which is why we only use reputable resources such as the NHS, reviewed medical papers, or the advice of a credible doctor, GP, midwife, psychotherapist, gynaecologist or other medical professionals. Where possible, our articles are medically reviewed or contain expert advice. Our writers are all kept up to date on the latest safety advice for all the products we recommend and follow strict reporting guidelines to ensure our content comes from credible sources. Remember to always consult a medical professional if you have any worries. Our articles are not intended to replace professional advice from your GP or midwife.
