For most of us, there comes a point in our lives where we start paying more attention to our skin and find ourselves toying with the idea of introducing some new products into our bathroom cupboard. One of which may include a jade face roller.

We caught up with Dr Ross Perry, Medical Director of Cosmedics skin clinics, to find out more.

What is a jade face roller?

A Jade face roller is a beauty tool made of jade or other stones that are used for facial massage. They date as far back as seventh-century China and have been used in beauty for thousands of years.

What are jade face rollers used for?

Jade rollers can be used for a number of things such as sculpting, toning, firming the skin, boosting circulation, reducing puffiness, detoxing and helping fine lines and premature ageing. They are also said to be a great way of encouraging the lymphatic system’s detoxification process by boosting the circulation and blood flow beneath the skin.

What are the benefits of jade face rollers?

A Jade roller is said to have a number of benefits such as reducing puffiness, detoxing the skin, toning, firming and helping to reduce fine lines. It can also help to unclog pores and build-up on the skin.

Do jade face rollers work?

There’s no real evidence so suggest a jade roller really does claim to do all the things suggested. However, lots of women have claimed that it’s helped reduce puffiness, lessened fine lines and gives the skin more of a glow.

How do I use a jade face roller?

It’s best to start off with a thoroughly cleansed face before you roll. Follow this by using a serum or moisturiser so the skin is moist. Start at the chin and roll horizontally out to the hairline. The pressure should be light and comfortable on the skin. The smaller part of the jade roller should be used around the eye area so place it in the inner corner of the eye and roll out towards the temples. You can also Roll from the eyebrows upwards to the hairline, moving across the forehead. The smaller side can also be used I use down the nose, area moving it in a horizontal motion. Most people can use a jade roller but it’s important to use a good technique. Like anything, if you rub too hard into the skin you can actually aggravate acne or cause sensitivity. It’s also important to keep it clean as bacteria can build up.

What should I look for in a jade face roller?

As genuine Jade is super expensive, opting for a cheap version will have very little benefit. Aim to purchase from a reputable beauty brand and expect to pay a reasonable amount for a good quality jade roller.

Look at the reviews and think about what you’re hoping to achieve from a jade roller. There’s no miracle cure of using a ‘beauty tool’ to make you look younger or reducing puffiness. A jade roller needs to be in addition to a good skincare regime

How do I tell the difference between a real jade face roller and a counterfeit?

Unfortunately in recent years, the production of genuine jade has been on the decline and therefore there’s a lot of replicas on the market with companies replicating jade as a stone, dyeing it and chemically treating other stones such as marble, serpentine etc.  Real jade varies from being dark green through to light green with swirls of white. If there are no imperfections like black dots or white swirls it’s likely to be dyed and treated and therefore fake. Jade is cool to touch so if it feels warm or doesn’t cool down quickly after it may well be a fake. Also, beware of the price, yes they are fairly inexpensive, but if you’re looking at one that’ ultra-cheap it’s more than likely not to be the real thing
