As the first school term of the year draws to an end in October, you may already be planning your next family trip. And whilst you may be tempted to head abroad for your holidays, this can be very difficult with young children. The good news is that there are some brilliant destinations much closer to home. Did you know children under 16 can travel around Wales on a Transport for Wales train for free when accompanied by a fare-paying adult?

Wales may just be what the doctor ordered. Breathtaking unspoiled scenery, historic castles fit for your little prince or princess, charming Welsh beaches and wonderful fresh air. Your family can have the holiday of a lifetime without even needing a passport. This is also the perfect trip if you are just wanting a weekend away.

Simply hop on a train and travel all around Wales. Your little explorer will love watching the world from the comfort of their train window. With no baggage limit you can even back a bag of treats to keep the kids entertained on public transport. On Transport for Wales trains, up to two children (under 16) can travel for free with a fare-paying adult. Similarly, under five’s travel for free on all National Rail services. We love this because it is a fantastic family-friendly holiday which is also kind to your bank balance.

If your family love the great outdoors then this is the perfect destination. Whether you are planning a long weekend or a week's getaway there is so much for the whole family to enjoy. Here are our favourite family-friendly things to do in Wales.

Things to do in Wales with kids

Rock pooling: There are endless rock pools for your little ones to explore in Wales. From limpets to shrimps and even starfish and crabs. Your little one can get up close and personal with the vast sea creatures of Wales. For our favourite rock pooling locations hop on a Transport for Wales train and head to Colwyn Bay in North Wales.

Exploring nature: Being in nature has been proven to improve wellbeing for not only children but adults too. There are so many lush unspoiled forests and lands to walk through in Wales. One of our favourite places to explore via train is Abergavenny, it provides an ideal base for exploring the Brecon Beacons on foot. A short walk from the town centre takes you into the countryside, longer walks could take you to the top of one of several mountains overlooking Abergavenny.

Historic sites: Did you know that Wales has more castles per square mile than any other country in Europe? Your little prince or princess can explore more than 120 historic locations across Wales, many of which are easily accessible by Transport for Wales rail. With a valid same-day rail ticket, you and a travelling companion can get two entry tickets for the price of one when you visit some of the best-known landmarks in Wales. We love Caerphilly castle.

Beaches: Wales has a spectacular coast line with more than 150 stone and sand beaches. So if you are looking for a beach holiday you don't have to hop on a plane to Spain. Rather a simple train journey to Aberystwyth on the West Coast.

Important things to note before you travel;

  • Free child travel is only available in Standard class

  • Up to two children can travel for free, per paying adult. Adults must obtain a ticket for all children travelling. Free child travel tickets are only available from a ticket office or on-board from a conductor

  • Under 5’s travel for free on all National Rail services
