Sitting above the little fishing village of Portreath on Cornwall’s north coast, Landal Gwel an Mor offers the chance to unwind in the spa or your own private hot tub and for kids go wild in the three-storey soft play at Base Camp or make furry friends at the Feadon Wildlife Centre. With gorgeous sea views, a beach within walking distance, and some of Cornwall’s top attractions just a short drive away, the UK family holiday park has the perfect balance of grown-up comfort and kid-approved fun.

Location

Landal Gwel an Mor is located in Portreath on Cornwall’s rugged north coast, and just a short woodland stroll from sandy beaches and surf schools. As its Cornish name suggests - ‘view of the sea’ - many lodges offer coastal views and private hot tubs for a truly scenic stay.

Beyond the resort, it’s easy to explore iconic Cornish attractions such as the Eden Project (36 miles), Lost Gardens of Heligan (28 miles), St Ives (16 miles), and Tehidy Country Park with its woodland trails and lakes only 3 miles away. With surfing, kayaking, coastal walks on the doorstep, and nearby hubs like Newquay and Truro, we were really drawn to Gwel an Mor as a perfect base to combine seaside adventure with family time.

Accomodation

My family stayed in the 6‑person Scandinavian Hot Tub Lodge at Landal Gwel an Mor, which is a spacious, two-storey, detached timber cabin. Taking advantage of the sea views with an upside-down layout, the ground floor offers three well-appointed bedrooms - one master double with an en‑suite and two generous doubles or twins - plus a family bathroom with a shower-over-bath.

The open-plan living area upstairs features a cosy wood-burning stove, smart TV with streaming options, DVD player, and HDMI connectivity, alongside a modern, fully equipped kitchen and dining space - ideal for relaxed evenings in.

The lodge has a great-sized garden with a deck, outdoor furniture and a roomy hot tub. We were travelling with our dog Luna, so having a secure, fenced-off garden was a huge bonus, as other holiday parks we’ve visited haven’t had this.

The balcony on the first floor offered lovely sea views and made for a dreamy spot for morning coffee or a sunset drink when our son had gone to bed.

Practical features include Wi‑Fi (although this isn’t the best), a dishwasher, washer‑dryer, microwave, fridge‑freezer, cafetière and kettle. You can also request a cot and a highchair, which is great for saving space in the car. It was also very handy having a baby gate, although this was at the bottom of the stairs and with the living room and kitchen being upstairs, where we spent most of the time, we really could have used a gate there too, especially with an exquisite toddler!

We were missing a few things that we were expecting in our lodge, such as a dog bed, a hairdryer and a lighter. However, a quick call to reception and these were all brought to our lodge soon enough.
While we really enjoyed our lodge and thought the decor and furnishings were fab (our son loved the cosy nook under the stairs), it was quite tired in places and could definitely do with a good touch-up, although this wasn’t something that impacted our stay.

Facilities

In terms of the holiday park itself, everything is really accessible on foot or with a pushchair, although if making your way through the woods to the beach, you'll definitely want a baby carrier for ease. One of our favourite parts was that we could stop by to see the animals whenever we fancied - something our son loved.

Overall, Landal Gwel an Mor offers a great mix of facilities and dining options tailored for families and couples alike. There’s Base Camp, a three-story indoor soft-play and climbing complex which is perfect when good weather isn’t on your side or you have a rambunctious youngster, although there is an extra cost to this. I’d love to see access included with any stay booked at Gwel an Mor although I appreciate this might not be financially possible.

Access to the indoor heated pool is included, however. There’s also a spa with sauna, steam room, as well as a gym. My husband enjoyed a Deep Tissue Muscle Melt during our stay and left the spa reinvigorated and ready to dive back into parenting.

While you’re spoilt for choice being in such a great location in Cornwall, outdoor activities at Gwel an Mor include archery, tennis, croquet, a nine-hole golf course, coarse fishing at Clover Lake, and bike hire for exploring.

We loved our visit to the on-site Feadon Wildlife Centre, which brings wildlife close to guests in a really special way while rescuing and rehabilitating injured wildlife, including birds of prey. As well as a general day visit, there are lots of ranger-led experiences you can book onto, like owl encounters, reindeer walks and meerkat encounters.

My family went along to the Meet the Animal experience, run by the lovely Jo. We were able to get up close to goats, reindeer, snakes, owls and more, even holding and helping to feed the wildlife while Jo told us information and facts about them. Although compact, the Centre is a really lovely facility that is a great asset to Gwel an Mor and I really hope it continues to thrive.

There’s also a sensory, wheelchair-accessible play area, which was brilliant to see.

Food and drink

If you want to stay on-site for food and don’t fancy cooking, The Terrace Restaurant and Bar serves casual all-day meals at lunch and dinner with takeaway options available. We went for a meal on our first night at Gwel an Mor. The staff were lovely, although the service was a little slow at times and it didn’t feel like there was enough staff for how busy it got.

The food options range from pizzas to burgers, plus classics like steak frites and fish and chips. Made using locally sourced Cornish ingredients, we thoroughly enjoyed our nachos starter and loaded burgers, but our chosen desserts of sticky toffee pudding and churros were pretty underwhelming.

Opposite The Terrace, the Tipsy Turtle Bar, overlooking the coast, serves cocktails, Cornish liquors, coffees, pizzas, and light bites in a relaxed setting, although we didn’t see this being used during our time at Landal Gwel al Mor; however, we were staying out of peak season when it was fairly quiet which may be why.

Although it wasn’t something we experienced for ourselves, for a special night in, the Wild Kitchen delivers al fresco dining experiences under a retractable canvas with private chef service.

Final verdict

For my family, Landal Gwel an Mor offers that elusive mix of family-friendly fun and grown-up comforts. From paddling at nearby Portreath beach to spotting owls and reindeer at the wildlife centre, there’s plenty here to keep kids entertained, while the private hot tubs, spa and sea views make sure parents feel like they’re on holiday too.

The lodge gave us plenty of space and comfort (especially with a toddler and a dog in tow), and it was brilliant having family-friendly extras like stair gates, highchairs and secure gardens included.
While we did notice a few niggles – slightly patchy Wi-Fi, some tired decor and a few forgotten bits that needed chasing – they didn’t take away from what was a brilliant family break. All the staff we met were lovely and we really appreciated the gestures from the team of a dessert plate at dinner and a bottle of prosecco to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

We loved the balance of laid-back lodge life and on-site activities, all just a short walk from the beach and an easy drive to Cornwall’s biggest attractions. If you’re after a UK getaway that blends beachy adventure, creature comforts and a healthy dose of fresh air, Gwel an Mor is definitely one to have on your radar.
