If the thought of flying with children is putting you off booking a summer holiday, have you considered staying closer to home? While the weather may not guarantee sunshine, there’s a lot to be said for a staycation, especially with kids.
And there’s no reason why a holiday in the UK shouldn’t have all the magic and excitement of a trip further afield. From adventurous days out to some of the best beaches in the world, there’s plenty of fun to be had on your own doorstep.
But while having a sleepover with Bluey in a themed hotel room is great for a night or two, and camping has its perks, if you’re taking a longer trip it’s likely you’ll want to have a bit more space – somewhere to cook meals (that probably still won’t be eaten – it turns out kids don’t get less fussy on holiday!) and relax once the kids are in bed. This is where the best Airbnb for families comes in.
How we chose these Airbnbs
If you’ve been on Airbnb lately you’ll know just how many options there are. Just narrowing down the place you visit for a family holiday in the UK can be hard enough, but throw in hundreds of options for an Airbnb for families and you’ll definitely need a holiday after all that trawling. So to take one job off your list, we’ve drawn on the firsthand experience of our #mumtribe on Facebook, spoken to colleagues and friends, and trawled the reviews to find the best family-friendly Airbnb for you.

Recommended by Editor of What's the Best, William Lobley, Hayfield Chicken Barn is set in a peaceful nine-acre field offering plenty of space for little ones to run wild. The unique upside-down layout features a spacious living area upstairs, including a kitchen, breakfast table, cosy sofa bed, and TV. Downstairs, a double bed and a bunk bed make it ideal for families - what kids don't love a bunk bed!?
A travel cot and high chair can be provided making it ideal as an Airbnb for families. It's worth bearing in mind that there's a feature spiral staircase connecting the two floors so it might not be ideal for toddlers but older children are sure to find it fun!
This has to be one of the best dog-friendly Airbnbs in the UK as guests have exclusive access to the entire barn and are free to explore the surrounding nine-acre field with up to two well-behaved dogs welcomed - there's certainly plenty of space for them to stretch their legs!
While there's no washing machine in the barn, guests can use the one in the main house by arrangement and a thoughtful welcome pack includes breakfast cereals, milk, butter, tea, and coffee.
Hartland Peninsula
www.airbnb.co.uk
This charming single-storey cottage located on the Hartland Peninsula is perfect for exploring the stunning South West Coast Path. It's one of the best Airbnb cottages in the UK and comes highly recommended by previous guests. The cottage, part of the Cheristow farm cottages, is clustered around a former farmyard and offers a relaxing retreat with amenities such as a hot tub, sauna, and a children's play area. One reviewer with children said "We had our primary school age children with us and the site felt very welcoming, safe and comfortable for them. They loved the climbing frame!"
It's ideal for a family of four, with a double room, a twin-bedded room, and an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area complete with a wood-burning stove. Guests can enjoy beautiful green views to the sea, access the indoor hot tub and sauna, and let children play in the shared area with views over fields and St Nectan's church tower. It's a short drive from the small shops in Hartland, with more extensive shopping options available 8 miles away in Kilkhampton and 15 miles away in Bude and Bideford. This cottage offers a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration for a memorable stay.
This child and dog-friendly cottage allows up to two well-behaved dogs, with a fee of £25 per dog per stay. A cot, highchair, travel cot and fireguard can be provided.
Ballintuim, Scotland
www.airbnb.co.uk
While this Airbnb may not be in the castle itself, children are sure to enjoy the experience of staying on a classic Scottish baronial estate. The two twin-bedroomed apartment is in the grounds of the castle, and while it's a compact space, the outside space makes up for this and is ideal for kids, as the reviews mention. "This is a wonderful estate and our family with three small kids thoroughly exploring the castle grounds. Plenty of imaginative play material. Truly a unique experience. Highly recommend".
A cot and highchair can be provided and there are no stairs, so one less thing to worry about with small children. A car is needed as it's in a remote location, but can be used as a base for exploring further afield, including St Andrews, Perth and the distilleries of Blair Atholl and Dalwhinnie.
Isle of Wight
www.airbnb.co.uk
This cute A-frame cabin on the Isle of Wight is like something out of a children's imagination. It's just 10 minutes from the bustle of Cowes or the peaceful Gurnard shingle beach and has outdoor space for little ones to let off steam.
There's space for four, with a main living space that includes two chairs that convert to single beds, while the main bedroom is up a ladder from the living area through a hatch to a mezzanine with a handmade wooden bed and triangle shuttered windows looking out over trees and fields. There's also an outside deck with seating and a BBQ for al fresco dining, or just enjoying the quiet once the kids are in bed!
As it's an Eco home, the toilet is composting which kids might find intriguing... as the descriptions states, "the toilet is like a regular toilet but is waterless and has a separator - meaning that you wee in the front section and "everything else" in the back section - it's easy, honestly! Eco (bum friendly) toilet paper is supplied along with sawdust to use as you wish. Serviced on request by us - no trouble at all!"
It's great for families, with 100% of the families who stayed there rating it 5 stars. While one pointed out that the ladder is tricky with kids it didn't impact on their enjoyment, saying "The staircase to the bedroom was a little tricky with a toddler and a baby, but we had known what to expect beforehand. Would definitely recommend." Another praised the comfort of the Airbnb, saying, "We're a family of 4 with young children and our tiny home had everything we needed for a comfortable stay, while also feeling like we were close to nature.
Goodleigh, Devon
www.airbnb.co.uk
Another Airbnb that's great for families, The Stables is a barn conversion on the grounds of Coombe Farm and offers kids the opportunity to meet the pigs and chickens and discover life on a working farm.
It can sleep 4 people across 2 bedrooms, each with super-king size bed which can be set up as a twin, and en-suite bathroom. There's a secure terrace with a BBQ and hot tub for sunnier evenings, while the open plan kitchen and sitting area with log fire are comfortable spaces to relax when the weather is more typically Devonian!
It's been rated 5* by families and it's easy to see why - from the private hot tub to the rope swing, endless trees to climb and the outdoor swimming pool (unheated, open from June-September) it's a natural playground for kids. Reviewers praised this open space and the proximity to the farm, with one saying "Our two boys loved being at the Farm running around exploring, so much so our youngest cried when it was time to leave & wants to stay again very soon!" and another saying that her daughter "loved seeing the cows when we drove in and out!"
Lyme Bay Headland
www.airbnb.co.uk
While Shepherd's Huts are ideal for kids, they often don't offer the space families need. This Airbnb is the perfect compromise, offering cosy bedroom accommodation with a double bed and bunk bed in the shepherd's hut, and the living area and kitchen in the neighbouring Summer House. The shower room, basin & toilet are in the adjacent hut, so bring flip-flops and a torch for nighttime visits!
It's well-equipped, with WIFI and mod-cons, including a PS4 games console and TV with Netflix and Amazon Prime. But with sea views from the hut, even the most screen-obsessed kids might be persuaded to put down their devices. There's a swimming pool which is open from 1st April until after the October Half Term and a sundeck, fire pit and gardens for exploring.
It comes highly recommended by families, with comments such as "Absolutely amazing stay for us and our little family", "We had the best family break, the place and the view were amazing, all as described" and "Whilst the adults enjoyed the breathtaking views the children enjoyed exploring the Beatrix potter style garden and we all had so much fun in the swimming pool."
Mayfield, Sussex
www.airbnb.co.uk
A cut above the average garden treehouse, this towering home sits in an area of outstanding natural beauty but is only 45 minutes south of the M25. It's suitable for children over 5 years old and can sleep two adults and two children across a king size bed and two single mattresses in a loft area accessed by a ladder and hatch. As one reviewer says, "What child wouldn't love climbing the ladder to reach their secret bedroom?"
There's a small kitchen with a hob and microwave (no oven), fridge and the essentials (a lot of the reviews mention the homemade bread provided by the owner and eggs from her chickens, so this seems to be particular highlight!)
Children's games and books can be provided, though with a deer park, zip line, tennis court nearby and acres of land to explore, kids are likely to spend most of their time in the great outdoors!
Whitby, Yorkshire
www.airbnb.co.uk
Children can live out their own pirate adventures in one of two cottages attached to the Whitby Lighthouse, perched on the High Cliffs of the North Yorkshire coast. With a double bedroom, a twin and a single, the cottage can sleep five people, while the small kitchen and sitting room let you whip up meals while looking out over the North Sea. There's an enclosed garden with a raised decked area and a travel cot and highchair are available on request.
This is one for getting away from it all - there's limited phone signal and no WIFI - so pack plenty of board games (there is a TV and DVD, so don't panic!) and make the most of the blustery coastal walks on your doorstep. It's the setting that really makes this Airbnb special, we'd argue it must have one of the best views of any Airbnb in the UK.
www.airbnb.co.uk
This family friendly, locally handmade & fully insulated yurt sits in farmland in on the border of Wiltshire, Dorset, and Somerset, making it a perfect option to explore the beautiful countryside of these counties. Animal-loving kids will enjoy the small flock of sheep, including friendly ewes Chilli and Kiwi, while parents can soak in the far-reaching views of woodland, lake and rolling hills from the wooden platform.
The Yurt itself is sure to delight small children - there's a double bed and a sofa bed, with space for an air mattress or cot so it can sleep 5 people. The bathroom is a short walk to the recycled shed in the trees where you'll find a composting toilet, inside & outside sink, and an electric shower with eco-soap & shampoo. The wood-burner is there for cooler evenings, but in the summer months you could buy some of the farm's home-reared lamb and pork to cook on the BBQ.
Children's books, toys and board games are provided, while a fire guard and and children's tableware makes life easier for parents. While there's no WIFI, there is electricity to charge those all-important devices, but kids might be too busy running around the paddock or exploring, as reviewers found. "My son enjoyed running around and meeting all the farm animals and wildlife" said one, while another said "Our 15 month old screeched with excitement when we arrived and she loved being so close to the sheep (Chilli) and her two lambs. A five star glamping experience that we will definitely revisit and would recommend to everyone!"
Is Airbnb safe for kids?
As with any holiday, it pays to do your research first. Airbnbs that aren't kid-friendly will generally say on their description but if you have concerns you can contact the owners directly. It's worth checking what safety measures are in place in Airbnbs that have pools or stairs for instance, to make sure they have gates or barriers. You'll have to use your own judgement and knowledge of your children to decide what's safe for them - for example, older children will love the Hoots Treehouse but this wouldn't be suitable for younger children. Airbnb also has its own safety advice to help you book the best Airbnb for your family.
If you're travelling to a holiday destination outside the UK, it's always a good idea to check the Foreign Office Travel Advice for the country you're visiting.
