These pancakes are already easy for your toddler to pick up and the interesting shapes will spark his interest
Ingredients

150g self-raising flour

½ tsp bicarbonate of soda

Pinch of salt

25g caster sugar

Pinch of cinnamon

1 egg
-
175ml buttermilk (or half yogurt and half milk)

50ml milk
-
30g butter, melted and cooled

Vegetable oil

Icing sugar
Get artistic with your little one by making these lace effect pancakes - they look almost too good to eat

Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a bowl. Stir in the sugar and cinnamon, then make a well in the middle

Whisk together the egg, buttermilk, milk and butter in a jug. Pour into the well in the flour mixture and store gently to make a thick batter.

Pour half the mixture into a large squeeze bottle using a large-holed funnel.

Heat a frying bag over a medium heat for a minute or until hot. Add ½ teaspoon of vegetable oil and smear it over the base with kitchen paper.

Squeeze the outline of a heart into the pan and add dots around the edges. Pipe swirls, crosses or whatever pattern you like inside the heart.

When the batter has set and is golden underneath, flip it over with a palette knife. Continue to cook the other side for a minute or until completely cooked, slide onto a plate and keep warm.

Keep re-oiling the pan and piping patterns of pancakes into the pan. You can let your toddler go wild by letting him squeeze the mixture in (but don't expect anymore more obvious than a scribble shape). Serve the pancakes dusted in icing sugar.
