Slices of tomato
-
Slices of gherkin or cucumber

Salad leaves
Make sure everyone’s hands are clean before they start mixing together these really simple burgers. Once the patties have cooked, the kids will enjoy designing their own burger, using slices of cheese, tomato and salad
-
Put the onion, garlic, beef and cheese into a large bowl and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
-
Use your hands to mix everything together well, squishing and mixing the mince until it turns a slightly pink colour. Divide the meat into eight even-sized portions and shape each portion into a patty.
-
Heat the oil in a frying pan on a grill rack over the fire, on a gas cooker, or directly on a barbecue flatplate. Arrange the burgers in a single layer and cook for 3–4 minutes on each side, or until the burgers are cooked through. The cooking time will depend on the thickness of the burgers and the heat.
-
Briefly toast the buns or bread to warm through, then add a beef patty and your choice of toppings and sauces.
