If your little one is starting school in September or moving up a year and wants a 'big kid' look, you might be adding a children's backpack to your back-to-school essentials shopping list. After school uniforms, a backpack is one of the more important items and it's one that has to do a lot of heavy lifting (literally!) so it's worth getting it right. They need to be durable, hold everything your child needs and more importantly, be something your child is happy to carry, so comfort and style are key.

While they might be happy to use their nursery backpack, getting them all kitted out with a new school bag can be a nice way to mark the step up to big school. Letting them choose their own backpack and stationary can also make the transition a little easier if they're feeling nervous about going to a new school or having a new teacher.

Our favourite back-to-school backpacks 2025 at a glance

The style and size of school backpack you're going to need will depend on how much your child has to carry but even if they don't need a whole array of back-to-school supplies, it's a good idea to choose a kids school bag that can fit their lunchbox, water bottle, a book and a kids' raincoat. We've rounded up our favourites for all budgets, tastes and sizes so you can find the right children's school backpack for you.

Why does my child need a backpack?

There are many reasons why your child will need a backpack. Some schools require young children to bring a spare pair of clothes or uniform, so they'll need a bag to carry them in.

If your child is a little bit older too, they might be keen to take their own stationary sets. A backpack is also handy for popping their packed lunches in and school water bottle.

If you only need to send their lunchbox, however, you could just buy a lunchbox bag for them instead.

What makes a good back-to-school backpack?

Ideally, you want the bag to be something your child likes and will be happy to carry to school. A style they can easily recognise is also helpful for spotting their bag in the cloakroom.

The main part of the bag needs to have room for what your child needs to take to school. Pockets are also handy if you like to send pocket money for school snacks or a place to put tissues or hand sanitiser. They might find a pocket on the outside is handy for keeping their water bottle separate from books which might get wet if there's a leak.
