Mum wants to change her 4-year-old daughter’s name because it’s ‘become too common’

Choosing a name for your new arrival can be a tricky task.

Do you opt for somethingclassic like James or Emily? A Disney-inspired moniker like Esmeralda? Or perhaps, settle on a very seasonalEden and Isra after pinging all your nearest and dearest with a 'What do you think?' message on Whatsapp.

One mum regrets her choice and controversially posted on a Mumsnet thread that her 4-year-old daughter's name has become 'too common'.

Uh oh.

The mum revealed how she decided on 'Esmée' for her daughter, a name she 'thought was very original as I hadn't heard another girl called it in about 20 years.'

However, fast forward four years and the unnamed mum is considering changing it completely after discovering there will be two other girls in her class with the same name.

"Totally hacked off and really upset by this," the woman wrote. "Maybe an overreaction but in the 1970's I was one of 5 named the same in my class and vowed never to have my [children] live with the same. Now history is being repeated," she continued.

"Am I unreasonable to change my [daughter's] name before September?" the mother wrote. "I love her name but HATE it's so common now."

This was met with a flurry of criticism from other users, including the very alarmed: 'are you for real???'

"She is 4 years not 4 months and will be so very confused if you change her name now!!" one fellow Mumsnet user wrote. "I don't think it's up to you, surely it's up to your daughter, it's her name now, not yours," added another.

Another wrote, "Ridiculous. Don’t give your daughter a complex about this."

To legally change your child's name, you just need the consent of everyone who has parental responsibility. Looks like Esmée could be going to school in September with an entirely different name...
