These delicious baby purées recipes transform into summery smoothies for mums to enjoy too.

If you’re making your own puréed baby food, these recipes mean you can enjoy a lunch-date with your baby, enjoying a home-made smoothie using the the purée as a base and adding a few extra ingredients. They’re all packed with fruit and veg, so they’re full of nutrients that will make both you and your baby feel good. The whole family will love these smoothie recipes.

All recipes make 100g of purée and a 400ml smoothie. They are suitable from six months of age, and can be frozen for use within three months, or refrigerated for up to 48 hours.

These all make great smoothie recipes for toddlers, too.

Orange, squash and mango smoothie

Your baby will love this velvety-smooth, sweet and easy-to-digest purée. With plenty of vitamin A and beta-carotene, it’s great for his developing eyesight and for strengthening his immune system. And the addition of a whole orange gives a refreshing citrus tang to its grown-up smoothie double.

Ingredients

  • 125g butternut squash, peeled and cut into small chunks

  • 1 mango (175g), chopped

  • 1 large orange

  • 100ml cold water

  • 3 ice cubes

Directions

  • Steam the butternut squash for 25 minutes until tender, and allow to cool.

  • Purée together with the mango.

  • Reserve 100g for your baby, then add all the other ingredients and whizz together to make the smoothie.

Beetroot & blueberry energy blast smoothie

This tasty nutritional punch will power you through the afternoon! The sweetness of the blueberries balances the earthiness of the beetroot beautifully. It’s full of vitamins and fibre, and with a boost of iron, it’s great for restoring your energy levels post-pregnancy. Just don’t be alarmed by the pink contents of your baby’s nappy afterwards!

Ingredients

  • Half a fresh beetroot (100g), peeled and diced

  • 200g blueberries, fresh or frozen

  • 50g full fat Greek yoghurt

  • 125g natural yoghurt

  • 20g (4tbsp) oats

  • 75ml semi-skimmed milk

  • Honey (optional)

Directions

  • Boil the beetroot cubes for 10-15 minutes until tender. Drain and rinse with cold water.

  • Purée with the blueberries until smooth.

  • Reserve 50g for your baby. When cool, mix with the Greek yoghurt (if you’re planning to freeze a portion, do this first, then add the yoghurt after you defrost it).

  • Add all the remaining ingredients and whizz together to make the smoothie, adding a little honey to taste, if you like.

Peach Melba smoothie

Peaches are an easy-to-digest first food, high in vitamin C and great for relieving your baby’s constipation. Greek yoghurt is higher in protein than normal yoghurt, so it will keep him feeling full for longer. And what can we say about the smoothie, except yum!

Ingredients

  • 2 large peaches

  • 50g full- fat Greek yoghurt

  • 100g raspberries, fresh or frozen

  • 150g vanilla ice cream

  • Honey (optional)

Directions

  • Add the whole peaches to boiling water and simmer for 3 minutes. Remove the fruit to a bowl of cold water and cool for 2 minutes. Slip the skins off and remove the stones.

  • Purée the cooled peach, then remove 50g to mix with the Greek yoghurt for your baby (if you’re freezing a portion, do this before adding the yoghurt).

  • Mash the raspberries in a bowl with a fork, adding a little honey, if you like, and put to one side.

  • Add the ice cream to the remaining peach purée and whizz together until smooth – add a splash of milk if it’s very thick. Alternate layers of the peach and raspberry in the glass.

Raspberry, banana and apple pink smoothie

This combination of raspberries and bananas has a beautiful flavour, and your baby will love the sweet taste. It’s packed full of nutrients and great for your digestion, heart and muscles.

Ingredients

  • 100g raspberries, fresh or frozen

  • 1 large banana (150g)

  • 2 large apples, cored and diced with the skin left on (250g)

  • 3 ice cubes

  • Honey (optional)

Directions

  • Gently cook the raspberries in a saucepan with a tablespoon of water for 5 minutes, then sieve to remove the pips.

  • Purée the raspberry pulp and banana together and reserve 100g for your baby.

  • Add the remaining ingredients and blitz, adding a little honey to taste, if you like.

Green chill-out smoothie

This vibrant and sweet purée uses two summer vegetables in season right now: courgettes and peas. It’s easily transformed into a refreshing and cooling smoothie, so make this on a warm, sunny day. Those veggies will give you and your baby a great hit of nutrients, while the healthy fats from the avocado will keep any hunger pangs at bay.

Ingredients

  • Half a courgette (100g), sliced

  • 100g peas, fresh or frozen

  • Half an avocado (75g)

  • 125g pineapple flesh

  • 100ml coconut milk (milk substitute, not tinned)

  • 2 mint leaves

  • 3 ice cubes

Directions

  • Gently steam the courgette and peas for 5 minutes and allow to cool, then add the avocado and purée.

  • Reserve 100g for your baby, before adding all the other ingredients and blending to make the smoothie.

Avocado or banana may discolour if you pop a portion of these purées in the fridge for the next day, but it won’t affect the nutritional value.
