When finding a breast pump, the options are seemingly endless, but picking one of these hands free breast pumps as a new mum can be a godsend, especially when you're exclusively pumping. Finding the best breast pump for you is so important, and the wearable breast pumps with hands free option will give you optimal flexibility with no wires or need for hand contact throughout the process, meaning you can express no matter what your day throws your way, and it makes it easier to find a comfortable breast pumping position.

They're easy to carry on the go. Compact and discreet, you can pump at home, at work, or even whilst out and about. These hands free breast pumps have been designed to sit comfortably under your clothes and move with you.

The best at a glance:
Best quiet hands free breast pump: Elvie Single Electric Breast Pump, £269
Best double hands free breast pump: Elvie Stride, £299
Best hands free breast pump: Pippeta Compact LED, £99
Best breast pump to use with a pumping bra: Lola & Lykke Smart Electric Breast Pump, £110

There are some electric breast pumps described as 'hands free', and while they are compact to carry, they are less discreet. They're not designed to be worn in the same way and will likely require you to hold the breast pump in place. As such, they're not truly 'hands free', but you can make them so by using a breast pump bra. This will hold the pump in place and free up your hands during expression.

So whether you're nervous about expressing in public or are looking for a breast pump to fit in with your busy routine, we've shared the best hands free pumps on the market.

Best quiet hands-free breast pump

Elvie Wearable Breast Pump
Price: £269

Description

This breast pump was awarded Gold for Best Breast Pump at the Mother&Baby Awards 2020.

The Elvie Pump was not only the world's first silent breast pump (yes, really!), but it was also the first wireless, wearable breast pump. Our very own Group Editor for Mother & Baby, Maria Martin, can attest that the pump is indeed truly silent, as recommended by a friend who claimed it would change her life – it really did! She describes it as a revelation, and raves about how the fit was so snug under her bra that she never used the bra adjusters. She does comment that her chest was left looking slightly more inflated than usual due to the breast shield fitting into the hub situated at the back, but thinks this is a small price to pay.

Aside from being silent and wireless, the free app provides ultimate functionality, convenience and stealth. Using your smartphone as a remote means you have control at your fingertips. Maria, in her review, admits that this is a Godsend when friends and family are around. As well as offering remote control for discretion, the app also monitors milk volume and your pumping history.

Improvements that Maria would like to see include being able to pump lying down, and for the pump to start expressing at a lower suction when turned on and build up so as not to shock the nipple. She also found it frustrating not to be able to charge and pump at the same time, so keep in mind that remembering to charge in advance is a must, with the maximum two hours charging time lasting two and a half hours worth of pumping.

Our mum tester, Helen, said: "This is fantastic to use whilst travelling and to pump at work. No wires make such a difference. I have not returned to work yet, but this will make it so much easier for me when I do so and much more discreet. I was able to pump in the car on a long drive to Cornwall, which was brilliant. As a mum of three, I no longer feel tied to my pump when the older two need me for something."

Best double hands free breast pump

Description

The Elvie Stride was awarded Silver for Best Breast Pump at the Mother&Baby Awards 2023 and Bronze in 2024.

Sharing the same app connectivity and ultra-quiet, lightweight in-bra qualities as the Elvie Pump, this Stride provides even more power without restrictive charging wires. Our Senior Digital Writer, Samantha Ball who tested and reviewed the Stride, loved the freedom she was awarded with it after previously using manual breast pumps. She says that she'd catch herself forgetting that she was expressing milk, relying on the handy default timer!

Samantha describes how easy it is to download the app and connect the pump, saying that the app talks you through the process step-by-step. She explains how she found the setup a bit fiddly the first time as settings need to be adjusted according to your suction and expression preferences, plus, you have to find which shield fits comfortably. After this though, it's easy to fit and press 'go'.

The breast pump provides hospital-grade strength (up to -300 mmHg single or -270 mmHg double) thanks to the clip-on power pack with the choice of 10 intensity settings. So you can still express discreetly without compromising on pumping performance. Samantha comments that she found the hub quite noisy unless she was stood up, otherwise it was quiet. She also agrees the device is discreet, being lightweight with tubes easily hidden and the hub clipped securely onto her trousers – but only when wearing a baggy jumper or coat. The external battery packs also makes the Stride less discreet when compared to the original Elvie Pump.

Reflecting on her thorough test of the Elvie Stride Samantha said: "I found that I could completely trust the Elvie Stride when I was expressing and freely move around as I know the milk was being stored securely and the seals prevented leaks. Despite it being more expensive than other electric breast pumps on the market, I would definitely pay more knowing that it's reliable, handy and comfortable to use."

Best hands free breast pump for comfort

Description

The wearable Tommee Tippee Made for Me™ breast pump delivers the performance you need from within your bra. Available as a single or double, this lightweight cord and tube-free pump is all about comfort. Our tester Claudine agrees, and says it feels soft against the skin with the ergonomic handle making one-handed or on-the-go use about the house, at work or in the cafe easy. Reviewers admit it's a little bulky but still fits in the bra, and while you may not want to look crazy walking down the street lop-sided, it works well sitting down allowing you to pump at your desk instead of only during breaks.

The device has smart ConstantComfort technology to mimic your baby's natural suckle and holds the pump gently in place. The nipple alignment guide uses light to help to get the most comfortable position - super helpful if you're having to pump in low-light conditions. However, mum Sara who had high hopes for this pump, struggled to achieve enough suction, finding it awkward and uncomfortable to keep it pressed firmly for long enough to express any milk. She wonders if the machine was simply incompatible with her body and would still recommend it to other mums due to its positive features. Mum Tash on the other hand found it to be a big improvement on electric pumps, managing to double the amount of milk expressed. She says it is really well made and suggests ensuring that you use the right size in order to get the best suction.

Although this pump has fewer settings than others on the list, you can easily adjust the settings, record your sessions via the app and feed directly from the 150ml pump milk collector bottle. It's also pretty quiet, with one reviewer noting that the radio covers the sound easily so it's not a distraction for others. Overall mums love this pump for multitasking and comfort, and as a happy bonus it comes with a super cute pouch to pop into your handbag.

Best wearable hands free breast pump

Description

With no wires, plugs, or hassle, you can pop this Fraupow wearable breast pump into your bra to express with ease on the move. Lightweight and durable, it's discreet enough to wear under your clothes with an anti-leak hands-free design. In reviews it has been described as a Godsend due to the freedom of pumping on the move. The motor unit is a bit bulky affecting the discreet-factor, but this reviewer still loves it for moving about the house, and especially when pumping at night enabling this to be done in bed.

It has powerful suction, 230 to 300 mmHg, that uses Fraupow's advanced air-pressure pulse technology to express milk without irritation. One reviewer says that they're able to fill the pump in just 20 minutes when pumping at their peak times. In fact, they loved it so much that just one week in they just had to get another so they could double up! However another tester says that compared to other electric breast pumps, the suction doesn't feel as strong, although it still manages to express effectively and more so than when using a manual pump. The pump also has a strong battery life of 90 minutes and is USB rechargeable, an ergonomic shape for comfort and a variety of settings including 12 intensity levels and three modes.

Best hands free breast pump for on the go

Description

The Pippeta Compact LED was awarded Silver for Best Breast Pump at the Mother&Baby Awards 2024.

The Pippeta Compact LED breast pump is an affordable handsfree breast pump which allows busy mums to express on the go. The LED displays four different types of pump modes; Massage, Lactation, Expression and Auto and each mode has 12 levels of suction power. Our tester and mum-of-two Raman agrees that its compact lightweight design with a range of suction modes makes it comfortable to pump while carrying on with your everyday tasks.

While the pump has no battery level sign it does have a good battery life. Our tester used the pump a few times a week from one full charge and was able to get 5-6 pump sessions. She describes it as relatively quiet, but was only comfortable using the pump at home rather than out and about due to it sticking out a bit under the contour of her clothes, despite being compact. The pump also lacks a timer to show how long you have pumped, but our tester noted that it does come with an automatic switch-off after 20 minutes.

She describes how the silicone material makes it easy to clean and assemble, with the option of using a steam steriliser or the dishwasher. She does point out that the transparent pieces are easy to misplace, especially the smaller parts – but don't worry, this hands-free breast pump comes with extras in the box, including bra adjustment buckles allowing you to adjust the position of the pump for a comfortable fit.

With its 150ml capacity, our tester says she would 100 per cent recommend this product to her family due to the ease of use and cleaning, as well as the different modes to tailor the pumping experience, not to mention the affordable price tag!

  • Reliable with spare parts included – unlike other breast pumps, all additional spare parts are included in the box

  • Wide variety of suction and strength settings – you get four different types of pump modes, each with 12 levels of suction power
  • Compact and lightweight design - fits comfortably in your nursing bra for hands-free pumping

  • Unfortunately, there's no timer to show how long you have pumped
  • The lack of battery level sign could be annoying if you run out before you're finished pumping

Best breast pump to use with a pumping bra

Description

The Lola and Lykke Smart Electric Breast Pump was awarded Gold for Best Breast Pump at the Mother&Baby Awards 2023 and 2024.

While not completely hands free, since it's an awards favourite with our Mother&Baby Awards testers, we thought the Lola&Lykke Smart Electric breast pump was worth a mention as you could combine it with a pumping bra. Our testers particularly favoured the streamlined design of the Lola&Lykke Smart Electric breast pump, commenting on the lovely soft grey colour of the unit and stand, describing the design as sleek and modern. The product is great for super-convenient pumping, and mum Vicki describes it as a "comfortable and easy process". The unit is lightweight, but some mums have experienced fatigue while holding it, especially those not able to make use of the table stand due to their breast size. One of our testers got around this by propping it on a cushion to be hands-free while feeding their baby from the other breast, explaining that it's easy to do so as the device isn't too bulky.

The ultra-soft silicone breast shield helps massage the breast to promote let-down and optimise milk flow, with several stimulation settings and express modes. Great for pumping on the go, our testers are delighted with the wireless design that provides complete freedom to move around, commenting that the battery lasts for several days. The product actually states that it has a two-hour battery life, but is easy to charge via USB. Our testers also approve that the functions are positioned on top of the bottle/pump for easy viewing, and love the touchscreen technology that's handy for operating, tracking, and recording your pumping sessions.

Further convenient features include; being able to pump directly into the baby bottle provided, which busy mums have expressed makes life so much easier; the closed system prevents breast milk from backing up to the pump; and with minimal pieces the whole process is made much quicker and the breast pump easier to clean.

Our mum tester, Brogan, said: "This makes my life easier as a mum as this is one powerful breast pump! This is very powerful compared to others I've tried. I had given up with pumps as they never seemed effective at all, even with an oversupply of milk! I love how all of the functions are on top of the bottle/pump. Makes life so much easier as there are no complicated buttons to fiddle with!"

Cons

  • It's not truly a hands-free without a pumping bra, which isn't included

Best affordable hands free breast pump

Momcozy S9 Wearable Breast Pump
Price: £64.99

Description

The Momcozy Wearable Breast Pump is a great affordable hands-free option for any mum on a budget. You won't have to compromise on style either – choose from gorgeous grey, pink and green! We think it also looks much smarter than some of the other alternatives, and the best bit is that it's super quiet too at 50dB - perfect for snoozing babies.

This pump is battery-powered so you can pop it in your bra and go, so you can carry on with your day whilst you're pumping milk. It has high-frequency micro-shock movements that'll help massage out any blockages too

Our mum tester Gethyn Taylor struggled to pump once a day, if she was lucky, before trying out the Momcozy breast pump, and now she can easily go four or five times a day, no problemo! SHe says, "I can get on with everyday tasks or sit and relax knowing that I’m pumping without the effort." She was able to express a good amount of milk and found it easy to clean too. "I would often have difficulty positioning my wired electric pump to be able to get a continuous flow of milk," she says, "but the suction on this ensures a strong and regular pump." And as a bonus she said it came pre-assembled with spare parts in the box – what more could you ask for?

Our tester and first-time mum Jess Parkin was brand new to breastfeeding and pumping. She said that 90 per cent of the time it’s great, but sometimes it does lose suction and she has to hold it again. She says " this is only if I move too much and dislodge it. Overall it’s a brilliant pump." She uses it at night when her partner is sleeping, describing the experience as comfortable and "nice and quiet". She adds that it charges quite quickly and holds its charge for a good amount of time – although she only pumps for extra bottle feeds as she mostly breastfeeds, so you may need to charge yours more, and Jess advises investing in two rather than one.

Pros

  • It's lightweight and discrete – the pump has been upgraded with a new smaller size by 20%, and won't leave your bra bulging
  • Enjoy convenient hands-free pumping – without getting tangled up in cords
  • Less nipple pain and more letdown encouraged – with 2 modes of expression and mixed suction with 9 intensity levels for each and the baby-stimulation pumping mode mimicking the natural baby’s sucking rhythm and increasing milk production, you get more milk in a shorter time!
  • Low noise won't disturb baby – Low 45db sound ensures silent pumping at night
  • Easy use at night – with an easy-to read (even at a glimpse, they say) LED screen
  • Easy to use and clean – with whole food-grade safe silicone material approved by FDA and taking less than a few seconds to pop inside your bra and start milking. The one-click on/off construction is also easier to be disassembled for cleaning.
  • Enjoy peace of mind with this safety feature – The pump automatically shuts off the after 30mins after it stops operating.
  • Easy charging with 24 hours on one charge – with a bigger and better battery and fast charging Type-C charging port you can charge the pump in just 2.5 hours, which will give you a good eight to nine pumping sessions lasting a whole day outdoors if needed. (It's recommended to use 5V-1A Power adapter for charging)

Cons

  • Some say it's tricky to clean
  • The pump can occasionally lose suction
  • You may need to charge more if you only have the single pump

Best easy to use breast pump for new mums

Description

if you're a new mum, or new to breast pumping, the Medela Solo Hands-Free Breast Pump is so easy to use, you'll love pumping for your little one! Our mum tester Hannah Mellin says that throughout her pregnancy she was overwhelmed by a lot of things, the main one being the world of breast pumps, but with one three parts, this pump wasn't too daunting.

Hannah started her pumping journey with a manual pump, but soon needed something more advanced when her milk started to come in. When she received the Medela Solo she says, "I looked at the box a bit like a deer in the headlights at first. Thoughts of 'What bit goes where!?' and 'What if my nipple doesn’t fit?' were going through my head." Thanks to the scannable QR code on the front of the box she was able to download to free app and says "things got a whole lot clearer." The app is great to keep track of feeds and how much you’re expressing, and the family app provides you with real-time tracking as well as pumping tips and handy guides.

The three parts are the breast cup that catches the milk, a tube that provides air, and the handheld control unit that has just four simple buttons – and that's literally it! Hannah loved that all parts are dishwasher-safe for stress-free cleaning too. She says "All in all, it is pretty small and neat, but I would say the cup itself is bigger than some on the market which is good if you want to pump a lot of milk in one go, but not so good if you want to easily slot it in your bra and have larger breasts." For a hands-free experience the remote control can easily fit in a pocket and the charger provides a lengthy amount of time, so you can easily pump a few times before the red light starts flashing, she says.

One thing Hannah loves about the Medela Solo Hands-Free Breast Pump is the difference in the pumping settings. Using an electric pump can be overwhelming and can cause a little discomfort at first (especially when your boobs are sore). Hannah says, "I was pleased to find how gentle the first setting was. You can easily stay on that setting for a while before building yourself up to the stronger ones." She liked the transparent design too, meaning it was easy to place her nipple correctly and see how much milk she had expressed.

Hannah did find the instructions to be a little difficult to understand, despite the app and handy guides helping her to get her head around how to use the pump, "but that might just be personal to me and the fact I hadn't done too much research on breast pumps as a first-time mum." she says. She also found that the cup can leak at times, especially when transferring to a breast milk storage bag or container. She says you have to be careful about the extra milk you can catch in the middle of the cup.

Pros

  • Easy to take with you – the compact and lightweight design and the built-in rechargeable battery means it's easy to fit in a pocket or carry
  • Great for portability – when combines with the wearable milk collection cup, it keeps you mobile when you need it most
  • The wearable collection cup has a comfy fit – with an anatomical design that fits your breast shape and supports effective milk expression for maximum comfort
  • Enjoy wearing it discreetly in your bra – it's one of the lightest available at just 76 g
  • Easy to clean – with only three parts to assemble, it's also dishwasher-safe
  • Easy to check your nipple placement – with a transparent design, which prevents rubbing and supports effective milk expression. The see-through cup also helps you notice when and how your milk is flowing, and measure your volume at the end of pumping
  • It's like a personal assistant – with automatic tracking by connecting with the Medela Family™ app you get real-time tracking, personalised, science-based content as well as smart tools and pumping tips
  • Easy to use – with just four buttons you can enjoy intuitive control

Cons

  • The cup size is bigger than some on the market which isn't as discrete, especially if you have bigger breasts.
  • Instructions may be difficult to understand
  • The cup can leak at times

How do hands-free breast pumps work?

Wearable hands-free breast pumps are the most hands-free you can get. Designed to comfortably sit in your bra, these breast pumps are battery-powered, express, and collect milk all in one unit. They'll often have no external battery packs or tubing, or if they do, they'll clip onto your trousers' waistband. They're often shaped to mirror that of the breast for discretion.

What to look for in hands-free breast pumps

Suction settings: All breast pumps work differently, and different pumps will have a range of settings to help you personalise your experience. Choose a pump that you feel will satisfy your suction needs. You'll need to experiment with the settings to find the right option for you. Expressing is much easier and far more efficient if you feel relaxed.

Weight: As you're likely to be taking it on the go, you'll want a breast pump that's lightweight. You'll find wearable breast pumps are the lightest as they are designed to sit in a bra without your hands for support.

Noise: Electric breast pumps can be noisy, so we'd recommend choosing one that is quiet for discretion.

Discretion: Speaking of, as well as noise, consider where and how you intend to use your breast pump. Wearable breast pumps are the most discreet, especially as electric breast pumps tend to come wired to external battery packs.

Power: All the best hands-free breast pumps are battery-powered, but battery life can vary. Whether it's rechargeable or powered by physical batteries, make sure you have enough juice to last when you're out and about. And make sure to remember to charge too!

FAQs

Is there a difference between hands-free, wearable and wireless?

There are two types of hands-free breast pumps: wireless and wearable options. Wireless pumps are battery-powered, smaller than electric models and can be used hands-free when used with a pumping bra. A wearable breast pump combines the motor and milk-collection system in a single device that can be worn inside a regular maternity or nursing bra, so no specialist pumping bra is needed to hold the device in place.

Can you sleep with a hands-free breast pump?

Most pumps don't recommend you use them while lying down, but with some breast pumps, a quick nap sitting up is certainly doable. If the pump has a timer so it will turn itself off automatically, and you know how much milk you produce in that time without the collection device on the pump overflowing, then you can set your breast pump going and doze off.

Do wearable hands-free breast pumps affect milk supply?

The suction strength for wearable pumps is not as strong as some electric pumps which you plug into the mains. For example, the Elvie's maximum suction strength is only 220 mmHG, while the Willow's is 245 mmHg —significantly lower than the Spectra S1 is 270 mmHg at its highest setting, similar to a hospital-grade pump. This means you'll most likely produce less milk per session with a wearable pump which can be a concern if you're having a low milk supply. However, some women produce better with a gentler suction.
