Silver Cross Lunar bedside crib

The Silver Cross Lunar crib can be a bedside crib, stand alone crib or easily folded and taken along on a family holiday or for overnight stays. It is suitable from birth up until approximately 6 months, so it's perfect for your little one's first night at home or first trip away.

With a handy drop down panel, and bed attachment, you can sleep beside your little safely, using the Silver Cross Lunar as a bedside crib, plus with breathable mesh sides it is even easier to keep an eye on your little one. Alternatively, the side can be put up and the crib can be used as a standalone cot, and because it is lightweight, you can easily carry it to different rooms in the house.

The Silver Cross Lunar is extremely versatile, not only with the way you choose to use it but it also boasts 7 different height positions and two incline positions which might help with reflux. We also love that it has a handy storage shelf underneath to store those essentials, especially for night feeds, so you can easily grab them when needed. There are lots of beside cribs and Moses baskets to choose from but we think the Silver Cross Lunar provides a great option for both home and away.

Testing the Silver Cross Lunar

I was pleasantly surprised by the Silver Cross Lunar bedside crib. Upon unboxing, it comes in a nice case with straps for easy transportation and storage. It is not too heavy and so could be transported or moved around easily. It was extremely easy to assemble - not much to it at all and it folds out well. There are not many pieces to assemble & it's uncomplicated, so this was a plus point too.

Practical

There is a storage shelf underneath which I feel is a nice touch. It’s handy to store muslins, nappies and clothing etc and to have them so readily to hand in the night. It is compatible with our bed, an ottoman with wooden slats. However as it straps to the slats we would have to disconnect the crib from it in order to lift up the ottoman and access our under bed storage. Due to the design of the legs of the crib however, and our bed sitting straight on the floor (limited space underneath), we were unable to get the crib hard up to the mattress of our bed. Therefore there is a gap between the crib and our bed, so for safer sleeping I’d be inclined to leave the side up most of the time.

Versatile

There’s a really good range of height settings for it (7 height positions) so it could easily be used alongside a bed but also would work well as its own freestanding crib. It can also be set to incline which I thought was fantastic, as this can help with reflux.

Stylish and comfortable

The materials all round are lovely. It’s very soft and breathable for baby. The mattress in particular I was impressed with, high quality and very soft. It is backed by a decent board underneath, unlike many other baby mattresses it is not just a flimsy piece of foam!

The overall design is nice, it looks modern and I like the oatmeal colouring & wood effect legs/rim (this seems to be aluminium with a wood effect finish). Although it is neutral colouring, I would say it may not match everyone’s decor though. It is made from some soft materials, but seems durable & well made. It doesn’t seem it will break easily. However, I would say that whilst it is stable, due to the design of the mattress area being suspended, it can be wobbled easily if knocked which could disturb your baby. It straps on well to the bed for safety, which is of course very important.

The side comes down to the bedside very easily, it simply unzips & two buttons release the rim to allow the side to drop down. I would however say that when the side is down, it doesn’t seem a nice finish with the edges of the rim exposed.

Final thoughts on the Silver Cross Lunar

There are lots of cribs and Moses baskets available and the Silver Cross Lunar offers practicality, versatility and a stylish design. In terms of things that could be changed, our mum tester, did say, "unfortunately I do feel its biggest downfall is that it doesn’t seem it would be easy to clean. It’s advised on the labels to sponge clean only - and this is the only option as it does not come apart, there are no removable covers. Even the mattress has no removable cover for washing, so a mattress protector is definitely needed for this." However, while this is disappointing there are a lot of good points with this crib. We love that it can be both a standalone crib and a bedside crib, plus it folds up compactly to be used for travelling, which is great when you have a little one to keep their sleeping space familiar.

Our mum tester, Kelly, said " overall I feel it’s a great bedside crib. Really beautiful and good quality!"

Silver Cross Lunar FAQs

How long can you use a co-sleeper for?

Most co-sleepers can be used from birth to around 6 months old, and in the case of the Silver Cross Lunar, that is 6 months or 9kg. Therefore, it really depends on the growth and development of your little one, meaning they could grow out of a co-sleeper sooner than 6 months, or it might last a bit longer, although we advise you follow the manufacturer's recommendations for safety.

Is a bedside crib better than a Moses basket?

Both bedside cribs and Moses baskets provide great space saving options plus they are compact and some can fold down to be used for travelling too, although it might be tricker to fold down a Moses basket and also your little one is more likely to outgrow a Moses basket sooner. Both offer safe sleepenvironments and also comfort for your little one being close to you. It is a personal choice, they both have advantages and disadvantage, so you need to ask yourself what space you have and how you want to use a bedside crib, or Moses basket before purchasing one. For example, do you want something you can move up and down stairs easily? A Moses basket might be preferable. Do you want something that will last longer and closer to the 6-month-mark, or is easy to pack for travelling? Then perhaps a bedside crib is the right option for you.

When should I switch from a bedside crib to a cot?

Again it is a personal choice. Some parents choose to make this transition between the 9-12 month mark, but it really depends on what you think is best and what you think is right for your little one. For safety reasons, it is however important that you note, the NHS recommend you sleep in the same room as baby until they're 6 months old.
